O/T Sky Football coverage

Post by the pieman »

i attended our team monthly briefing earlier this week and there was a guest speaker in attendance

the subject was all around the Sky / Premier League, and their desire to attract new audiences and an acceptance that subscriptions to watch the football will inevitably decline based on the below. They have engaged with Oracle to use their cloud infrastructure / analytics to provide this.

They have realised that GEN Z (1997 - 2012) is very different to slightly older generations, in that the older generation will attend the games, pay for the football subscription and can stay focussed for 90 mins.

However, GEN Z (and the speaker admitted this sound condascending) have a low attention span, like to snack content, are ultra connected (mobile phone / smart devices / social media channels), are born bored, are less easy to impress and are much less enthusiastic about things.

so they are introducing things this season based on real time analytics (supported by 3 years worth of historical data) to capture the attention of viewers both on TV and at the games. he chucked lots of stuff at us with examples but there will be all sorts of stats around formation (with & without the ball) / probabilities / momentum shifts etc to keep people engaged. Where normally you will wait until half time or post match shows to see the pundits give their view, this will be real time and a way of keeping people engaged who they believe dont want to sit and watch the game for 90minutes

why have i posted this, well in an era when it feels like rugby league is slowly dying, and we feel that nothing is being done, this is just another way that football is looking to attract / retain more fans and not just sitting on their laurels
