Discussions on the future of rugby league held between RFL, Super League and clubs

Post by josie andrews »

Discussions on the future direction of the game have today been held between the RFL and Super League Europe, and clubs from the Betfred Super League, Championship and League 1.

Subjects covered included progress towards the realignment of Super League Europe and the RFL, central funding distribution to clubs, and potential competition structures and new competitions to help grow the game commercially.

RFL Chief Executive, Ralph Rimmer was in a positive mood.

“We are all – Super League Europe, clubs and the RFL – focused on the future. All of us involved in these discussions today want the very best for their clubs, players, fans and the whole game,” Rimmer said.

“The collective approach has been positive and constructive, and there will be further consultation with clubs in the coming days.”

SLE Interim Chairman, Ken Davy, was also present.

“The emphasis of today’s meeting was to provide a platform for discussion on several key areas of the sport, which can be the catalyst to drive the game forward in the coming years,” Davy said.

The whole game approach to these discussions is testament to the importance placed on ensuring we deliver a compelling, long-lasting structure for the whole sport.

“The next two years are absolutely vital for the sport. We need to continue to make Rugby League an attractive sport to supporters, broadcasters, viewers and commercial partners.

Ultimately, this sport is about the players on the pitch, and the excitement and drama they create.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

First step is to get rid of Rimmer as chief executive he was never going to offer a fresh prospective.

If they truly want to grow the game they need to get the ideas from the younger generations.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Try telling that to the people who want to abolish 40/20s and go back to contested scrums!

I was just going to post the same thing about Rimmer and I had not read your post.

His name has been synonymous with administering the sport for years so it’s guilt by association I am afraid.

My heart sank when I saw yet again this notion of a “whole game approach”. That’s partly what got us into this mess in the first place. The idea there are three or four professional leagues within which clubs move up and down purely on sorting merit is crazy.

There is not the money to support it out there. The RFL love it though. By having a whole game approach they get to Lord it over SL and will be able to do things like set salary cap rules that may be to the detriment of SL.

They seem to live in a vacuum that they believe RL is insulated from outside pressure. If the NRL and RU are forging ahead with sponsorship deals they seem to pay no attention to it. The real world doesn’t seem to exist to them.

Ignore the NRL. Start referring to them as a different game let them run their game as they always wanted, in their isolated little backwater. Get the north Americans invovled again and go in that direction.

My reference to the NRL and RU was to do with how wealthy they are with sponsorship money, basically, and how the RFL ignores the reality outside of their little bubble in that respect.

I can’t see what the north American’s have to do with anything.

Article in the M.E.N states they want to reduce SL down to 10 teams to increase the competition…..

…..so we’re happy the game is still shrinking then?!?

No wonder we can’t get a decent broadcast deal if we are showing the same few teams again and again!

Sack loop fixtures if they go to 10 teams they need mid season internationals and a orgin style series being played different club stadium to make up revenue.

It would never happen because of the NRL being self-centered but

UK State of origin series, winner plays NRL state of origin winners.

You could make any series/internationals into day events have entertainment on, youth games, a fair. Make it more than just than just the match. Magic weekend at man cities ground was great for this touch rugby and other stuff outside, multiple bars and a big screen so you could watch the match outside if you wanted.

That would also have the knock on effected of only being possible to.the stadiums that meet the actual superleague standards as you need grounds outside to do it.

Don’t know if that’s tongue in cheek but a good shout. Don’t think it’ll happen btw

What is your obsession with North America ?

We aren’t even capable of increasing participation and crowds on the m62 corridor.
