Konrad Hurrell's Leeds Rhinos career could be over after injury news confirmed

The centre is set for a spell on the sidelines after scans on a foot injury.

Konrad Hurrell's season could be over after scans revealed the extent of the foot injury sustained in Leeds Rhinos' win over Leigh Centurions.

The Tongan powerhouse, who is off-contract at the end of the season, limped off in the second half of the club's victory and scans have revealed that he has torn his plantar fascia, a part of the foot that connects the heel bone to the toes.

As such, Hurrell will need to spend the next four to six weeks wearing a supportive boot before his injury is further assessed.

But the injury puts doubt over Hurrell's season, as well as his future at the club completely.

Hurrell is off-contract at the end of the season and has yet to sign a new contract, and his latest injury setback could have brought a premature end to his three years with the club.

Depending on the speed of recovery, the 30-year-old could return in time for the play-offs, should the Rhinos make the top six, however, there's also the possibility that Hurrell will not recover in time to feature even if Leeds do make it to the finals.

It's yet another cruel blow for head coach Richard Agar, who has lost Luke Gale for the next six weeks with a knee injury also picked up in the win at LSV.

Alex Mellor, Mikolaj Oledzki and Liam Sutcliffe have all been ruled out for the season, Jack Broadbent remains on the sidelines for several weeks and Jack Walker has missed the entire season.

Compounding that are two further absentees for Thursday's clash against Huddersfield. Rhyse Martin is suspended after picking up a one-match ban while new captain Matt Prior has not completed his Covid-19 return to play protocols.

That has left the Rhinos seriously depleted for the West Yorkshire derby, with Hurrell's injury blow the latest issue for Agar to contend with.
