England's clash with Fiji postponed as Shaun Wane's autumn schedule wiped clean

Post by josie andrews »

The game was due to be held in Rochdale as part of England's Rugby League World Cup preparations.

England’s friendly fixture with Fiji has been postponed until autumn 2022, the RFL have announced.

The game was due to be held at Rochdale’s Crown Oil Arena in October as a warm-up event for the Rugby League World Cup.

However, with the tournament being pushed back a year following the shock decision made by Australia and New Zealand not to send teams over due to player welfare concerns, the game will now be rearranged for a later date.

The game will still be played in Rochdale, which has a large Fijian population, but dates and ticket details have not yet been finalised.

Shaun Wane managed to see his England side in action for the first time in June as they took on and lost to the Combined Nations All Stars at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

However, as it stands, he will have to wait until next year to see his national team in action again with their hectic autumn schedule being wiped clean.

It is unknown whether any international rugby league will go ahead this year, but Wane and England fans will no doubt be hoping a fixture or two against northern hemisphere opposition can be arranged in the weeks following the end of the Super League season.

If no game can be arranged it means England will enter a World Cup year having played just once since winning the Baskerville Shield against New Zealand in 2018.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
