Love or hate the new crest, Hull KR on right path to brighter future

Post by josie andrews »

Rovers were keen to take their badge into the 21st century

The 'Rovers Revolution' got off to a shaky start, it has to be said.

That was Hull KR’s tagline heading into the 2020 season but there was no sign of progress on the field, albeit in a campaign heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

There was, however, a clear plan from top to bottom on how to transform the club into a Super League force.

Rovers are still some way away from reaching their destination but more and more people are starting to take notice of their journey.

Tony Smith’s side have won admirers for their substance as well as style, while off the field there is an energy driven by progressive thinkers.

Unveiling a new badge on the eve of the club’s biggest game in years could be viewed as a bold strategy but there is method to the madness.

All eyes will be on Craven Park on Saturday night, providing the perfect platform to showcase the club’s new look.

The crest will divide opinion – changes like this always do – but the Robins are determined to look forwards rather than backwards.

When the club celebrate their 140th anniversary in 2022, there will be a heavy focus on the future with a nod to past achievements.

The badge is a key part of that but its roots come from a meeting with Super League where clubs were told in no uncertain terms to “evolve or die”.

At that time, the 12 logos were viewed as not fit for purpose on digital or broadcast.

Some clubs grasped the nettle with Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils the first to reveal new crests.

Hull KR took their time with a sensitive project, canvassing the opinions of fans of all ages and even former players to ensure they got the balance right.

There was a widespread desire to retain the three crowns and shield while incorporating the robin, all of which are woven into the fabric of the club.

Rovers have managed to do that while modernising and simplifying the badge after looking at the NFL, NRL and other sports.

The new crest has the approval of owner Neil Hudgell, who provides the voiceover for the release video which carries the message: ‘You have to look forwards and evolve.’

To evolve and move forwards sometimes you need to make unpopular decisions for the right reasons.

Love it or hate it, there will be a widespread view among the fanbase that Hull KR are on the right path to a brighter future.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
