Super League referee to retire

Post by josie andrews »

Former Super League referee Gareth Hewer will hang up his whistle at the end of this season following a 17-year professional career.

Hewer – who has most recently been officiating in the lower leagues of the British game – will continue to referee in the amateur ranks and work with referees in his home county of Cumbria.

His last game in charge is this afternoon when he takes charge of Swinton Lions’ fixture against Widnes Vikings.

Hewer famously refereed Hull FC’s narrow 12-10 victory over Warrington Wolves in the 2016 Challenge Cup Final and was praised for the way in which he let the game flow.

With over 169 professional games under his belt, Hewer bows out, following in the past footsteps of the likes of Phil Bentham, Matt Thomason, George Stokes, Joe Cobb and Sam Ansell.

Hewer most recently officiated Salford Red Devils’ 24-14 victory over Wakefield Trinity in July of this year.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
