Sts v Leeds

Another nail in the coffin of professional RL

I didn’t say you would pick MM over Roby. I just pointed out MM can keep him quiet, which you agreed with.nathan_rugby wrote:Does he really?DaveO wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 12:04 am There is one player who has Roby’s number and that is Micky Mac. He can keep him quiet.
The player I’d want out of those mentioned is Percival.
Their tougher players fulfil their potential because they don’t pack the first team with them and promote far fewer than we do. Their young players play alongside established players. Wigan have lost the plot with that.
I do accept Roby had some quiet games against us when MM played but how long ago was that?
And given hookers don’t really directly compete against each other (like fullbacks) the way props or opposite wingers do, it’s an irrelevant comparison.
No sane person would choose MM over Roby.
As to how long ago this is, Roby is also older isn’t he.

Didnt Adrian Morley say something along about Terry Newton "everyone played slightly worse again Terry" i think thats the case for Micky Mac especially in his pomp for us. I mean people talk about Powells defence in the number of tackles he makes but put it this way if someone said to me ill give you £1000 to run at Powell 100 times or Mickey Mac 1 - id said i hope you can count to 100DaveO wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 12:54 pmI didn’t say you would pick MM over Roby. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

Got to be honest i was baffled when we let MM goWigan_forever1985 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 04, 2021 12:45 pmDidnt Adrian Morley say something along about Terry Newton "everyone played slightly worse again Terry" i think thats the case for Micky Mac especially in his pomp for us. He set our tone in defence and was the leader of our pack in that respect. In attack he was sharper than powell is now, and has a different side to his game, which we never really saw at Wigan as the hooker play is to get the ball away, not to scoot or play what you see in front of you. he improved massively over the years, as his speed and accuracy around the POTB improved from when he 1st came into the team.
in terms of Roby v MM, i was speaking to a Saints friend a few years ago. I wouldnt have swapped Roby for MM in the respective teams at that time because of the way the 2 teams played. MM fitted perfectly to our style whilst Roby fitted the Saints style. Roby is very much about getting a quick play of the ball from a dominant attacking play and getting on the front foot, where as MM really set the tone for our defence with big hits and IMO had the better of the games v Saints whilst he was at Wigan. Whilst Roby may make a lot of tackles too, he doesnt hurt in the tackle
At the end of the day we have 2 very good hookers in MM and Roby, but with different styles. Both are significantly better than Powell in all aspects of their play, and i think that is why our attack feels so laboured, as we just arent fast enough around the POTB
