Shaun Wane picks strong 20-man England squad for French test

Post by josie andrews »

Now that the book has closed on the 2021 Super League season, the attention now switches to England’s World Cup preparations as Shaun Wane looks to end a five-decade wait for World Cup glory in 2022.

Preparations get under way for the ex-Wigan boss with an interesting test against the French at the Stade Gilbert Brutus next week. The French will be able to field three Grand Finalists from this year’s decider as well as a number of other Catalans stars and plenty of players who helped Toulouse achieve promotion this year.

Wane has also been able to name a strong squad further raising expectations for what should be an interesting contest. That said, he was unable to name any Australia-based players as well as the likes of Sam Tomkins and Daryl Clark through injury. Clark’s absence sees England Knights Captain Danny Walker included along with Matty Lees who also featured in the Knights’ 56-4 win over Jamaica on Friday.

However, Jordan Abdull could make his international debut after a superb season for Hull KR which saw him nominated for the Man of Steel. Speaking of individual accolades, 2021 Lance Todd Trophy winner Niall Evalds features along with the former Man of Steel Paul McShane.

Unsurprisingly, double winners St Helens feature predominately in the squad through the aforementioned Lees, Alex Walmsley, Morgan Knowles, Tommy Makinson and Jonny Lomax.

Warrington are also prominent with four players named with Mike Cooper, Ben Currie and Joe Philbin joining Walker in the 20. League leaders Catalans are also represented through winger Tom Davies who could come up against fellow Dragons winger Fouad Yaha in the game.

The Wigan backrow could be included in the shape of Liam Farrell and John Bateman and they are joined by former Man of Steel Zak Hardaker as rumours about his future swirl.

Over in West Yorkshire, Wakefield fans will be pleased to see Reece Lyne named but he’ll have to fend off young Harry Newman of Leeds for a centre spot. Newman is joined by Kruise Leeming and Mikolaj Oledzki.

England’s 20-man squad:

Jordan Abdull (Hull KR)
Ben Currie (Warrington)
Tom Davies (Catalans)
Niall Evalds (Castleford)
John Bateman (Wigan)
Mike Cooper (Warrington)
Liam Farrell (Wigan)
Zak Hardaker (Wigan)

Morgan Knowles (St Helens)
Kruise Leeming (Leeds)
Matty Lees (St Helens)
Jonny Lomax (St Helens)
Reece Lynne (Wakefield)
Paul McShane (Castleford)
Tommy Makinson (St Helens)
Harry Newman (Leeds)
Mikolaj Oledzki (Leeds)
Joe Philbin (Warrington)
Danny Walker (Warrington)
Alex Walmsley (St Helens)

France name exciting squad ahead of England international

Ahead of next Saturday’s test match between France and England at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, French coach Laurent Frayssinous has named a 20-man squad.

The ex-Catalans Head Coach includes 10 players from his former team including three players who played in this year’s Grand Final in the shape of Mickael Goudemand, Arthur Mourgue and Fouad Yaha.

Another current Super League star also features in the shape of livewire Morgan Escare. The ex-Dragon currently plies his trade at Salford after a brief spell at Wigan and his 2021 campaign is best remembered for the try he scored against Leeds at the AJ Bell.

He scored that from the wing a position he’s likely to play with Arthur Mourgue most likely taking the fullback spot.

The rest of the squad is made up by potential future Super League players in the shape of Toulouse’s stars including Lance Todd Trophy winner Tony Gigot and former Catalans hooker Eloi Pelissier. Exciting backs Mathieu Jussaume and Mark Kheirallah also feature. The latter will also be pushing for the number one shirt.

It’s clear England will have to be on their game to match this French outfit next week with so much Super League pedigree and exciting talent in the squad.

France’s 20-man squad:

Ilias Bergal
Tony Gigot
Mathieu Jussaume
Mark Keirallah
Anthony Marion
Romain Navarrete
Eloi Pelissier
Maxime Puech
Justin Sangare
Mathieu Cozza
Jordan Dezaria
Mickael Goudemand
Benjamin Jullien
Matthieu Laguerre
Corentin Le Cam
Arthur Mourgue
Cesar Rouge
Paul Seguier
Fouad Yaha
Morgan Escare

It’s a pity they couldn’t make it a best out of three with at least one game over here.

Hull FC fans go into meltdown over England squad

When Shaun Wane revealed his 20-man England squad this morning for the clash against France next weekend in Perpignan, there was one notable absentee.

That man was Jake Connor – who topped the number of try assists in the 2021 Super League season with 22 – and Hull FC fans were duly drawn to the point.

There’s perhaps no getting away from the fact that both Zak Hardaker and Niall Evalds have been chosen in front of the Black and Whites’ number one and FC fans – as well as a number of neutrals – could not comprehend it.

One FC fan couldn’t believe it.

One of the weakest looking England squads I've ever seen on paper.

I presume the NRL isn't releasing their players again?
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Seems rather pointless for a one off game
