Exclusive: Lam is in the race to be named the new head coach of the Leythers.

Adrian Lam is in the race to land the Leigh Centurions job after being interviewed for the head coaching role.

Rugby League Live can reveal the former Wigan Warriors head coach was interviewed this week as the Championship club close in on making a final decision on the identity of their next head coach.

A number of candidates, including former Salford Red Devils boss Richard Marshall, are understood to have been interviewed as part of the process.

Leigh are on the lookout for a new head coach with Kurt Haggerty not taking the role on a permanent basis. Interviews started last month and are set to conclude imminently before a final decision is made.

Lam is currently without a role after his departure from Wigan, which came after a three-year spell in charge.

During his time at the DW Stadium, he won the League Leaders' Shield and reached one Grand Final. A mutual decision was made for Lam to depart, with Matt Peet set to take control next year.

Lam, 51, spent four seasons with the Warriors during a playing career that saw him play for the Sydney Roosters, Queensland and Papua New Guinea.

As a coach, Lam was in charge of PNG for the 2008 World Cup, has been an assistant at Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra. He has also been on the coaching staff at Cronulla Sharks and is currently Australia's assistant coach.

I read that somewhere…… thought he would have been long gone( home) by now…… this tells me he already has the job and was poached a while ago

Came from Matthew Shaw so will be bang on, I agree, If he hasn't returned home id assume he has the job, There is no way he was a last minute candidate.

Maybe we'll be getting him back in a couple of years, as per all our cast-offs :)

Leigh Centurions coaching appointments take new twist

Leigh Centurions’ quest for a new head coach and backroom staff is set to take a new twist as Kurt Haggerty will not be amongst them.

Haggerty, instead, has taken a new role at the Salford Red Devils, becoming assistant coach alongside Danny Orr to new boss Paul Rowley.

Names such as Richard Marshall and even former Wigan Warriors boss Adrian Lam have entered the fray, with interim coach during the 2021 Super League season Haggerty withdrawn from the running quite early.

Haggerty had been linked with a permanent deal at Leigh either as head coach or as assistant to a new appointment, and former Gold Coast Titans boss Jed Cartwright was also considered.

Cartwright, who turned out 16 times for Salford in 1997, is currently assistant to Kevin Walters at the Brisbane Broncos, but will not be taking the Centurions’ reins either.

Haggerty had previously said on the coach opening: “I understand the situation. Whatever decision the club make it has got to be the right one.

“I know the club want to rebuild and be competitive and get back in Super League.”

However, the Centurions under owner Derek Beaumont and head of rugby Chris Chester look set on two former Super League coaches in Lam and Marshall.
