Magic Weekend line-up revealed as Super League settles on location and new date

The Hull derby will be one of the headline fixtures when Magic Weekend returns to St James’ Park over the weekend of July 9 and 10 next year.

It is a mouthwatering line-up with St Helens taking on Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos facing Castleford Tigers in another derby.

League Leaders’ Shield winners Catalans Dragons will lock horns with Warrington Wolves and Super League new boys Toulouse Olympique have a date with Wakefield Trinity.

Huddersfield Giants – Magic Weekend’s most successful side despite losing to Wakefield this year – have been paired with Salford Red Devils.

The event delivered some memorable games this year with Catalans clinching the League Leaders’ Shield thanks to a stunning comeback against Saints and Leeds edging Hull in another golden-point thriller.

Super League has retained the formula that was used in 2019 and 2020, which was ultimately cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The league has been split into three sections of four - top, middle and bottom - with the odd-placed team playing the other odd-placed side within that group. The same applies with the even teams. For example: 1st v 3rd, 2nd v 4th, 5th v 7th, 6th v 8th and so on.

It was tweaked slightly this year with fixtures reformatted from the cancelled 2020 event to ensure teams played on the same day, in acknowledgement of the fans who had retained their tickets.

The line-up is set to be confirmed on Monday along with the location and a new date in July.

Magic Weekend has traditionally taken place in May with two exceptions – in 2011 when it was the opening round and this year to ensure as many fans as possible could attend.

Supporters flocked to Newcastle and will have the chance to return next year in the height of summer.

The city has been popular with Super League fans ever since replacing Manchester’s Etihad Stadium in 2015.

The event took place at Anfield in 2019 before returning to what has become its spiritual home.

St James’ Park was always Super League’s preferred location for 2022 and organisers have now managed to settle on a date with Newcastle United, a club under new ownership.

The full fixture list for the new Super League season is due to be released on Thursday.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
