Former Hull FC star Frank Pritchard is no longer in a coma but his lungs remain weak in his battle against coronavirus, according to Canterbury Bulldogs general manager of football Phil Gould.

The 38-year-old was left fighting for his life after suffering a collapsed lung and other major health issues as a result of Covid-19.

Pritchard’s condition has improved but it remains a worrying time as the FC favourite recovers in a Sydney hospital.

Gould tweeted: “Just an update on Frank Pritchard from his Brother. He’s out of the coma and in a ward.

“Lungs are still weak, but in stable condition. Will keep you updated.

“Prayers are helping. Thanks everyone.”

Pritchard made 26 appearances for the Black and Whites during a year-long spell in Super League in 2016.

He remains a hugely popular figure in west Hull after helping FC end their long wait for a Challenge Cup victory at Wembley.

Pritchard also helped Lee Radford’s side reach the play-off semi-finals, where they narrowly lost out to Wigan Warriors.

The forward returned to the NRL after the 2016 campaign to play out a final year with Parramatta Eels and his remarkable career came to an end in 2017 after captaining Samoa in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Pritchard’s career began in 2003 with Penrith Panthers, where he made 144 appearances before moving to Canterbury Bulldogs.

At the Bulldogs he played alongside current FC half-back Josh Reynolds, who wrote on social media following the news: “Thinking of you my brother, love you my man. One of the greats.”
