Anthony Gelling linked with move back to the UK

Post by josie andrews »

Anthony Gelling has been linked with a move back to the UK – barely a year after he left midway through the 2021 Super League season.

That’s according to Twitter page Rugby League In The Know which claims that: “Leigh Centurions are working to try and bring Anthony Gelling back to the club. They have been in talks for over 2 days now as Gelling is looking for a club for the 2022 season so he can gain a place in the Cook Islands RLWC squad. Nothing agreed yet. Confident talks ongoing.”

The South Sea Islander left Leigh Centurions back in June 2021 after he was cleared of GBH following a trial against his ex-wife and returned to his home back in Auckland, New Zealand.

Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont said at the time of Gelling’s departure: “I would like to personally thank Anthony on behalf of everyone at the club for the fantastic job he has done.

“To have come to England under the circumstances he did and to have ripped in and applied himself in the manner evident in his performances speaks volumes for him.

It was clearly a difficult time for him whilst he was here, yet he was outstanding in everything he did and extremely committed to the club, the coaching staff and his teammates.”

Gelling first came to the UK shores with the Wigan Warriors in 2011, playing 115 games over a period of six seasons before leaving for the New Zealand Warriors at the end of the 2017 Super League season.

The three-quarter returned to England with the Widnes Vikings where he played 18 times and then the Warrington Wolves in 2020 where he registered 13 appearances.

A short spell at Leigh – with six games under his belt – ended midway through 2021 as Gelling left to return home following the end of his trial.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Why on earth do they want him back? He has proved unreliable to say the least.

It just shows how unprofessional RL in the UK is that chairmen even entertain the idea of employing players like him. Presumably they think he's better than what they have and are prepared to take the risk. It's just sad how UK clubs seem so desperate to chase players with a dodgy record as far as professionalism goes. Wigan have not been immune from this either of course but you'd think clubs in general would learn the lessons of others and steer clear.

I doubt this statement would have been made if it was untrue.!

It sounds like total bollocks to me. His attitude when he left Wigan stank. Back because his girlfriend was sick but used it as a way out of his contract and to get a gig with NZ Warriors denying Wigan a transfer fee. Came back to play for a rival. Got his contract cancelled there. Eventually left the U.K. following the GBH charge and now he wants back because he fancies turning out in an international. The guy just isn’t a good enough player to warrant the chances he’s been given IMO.
