Steve McNamara reportedly listed as potential option for Canterbury Bulldogs following Trent Barrett’s departure

Post by josie andrews »

Trent Barrett is no longer head coach of the Canterbury Bulldogs after being let go by the club yesterday.

Now, the rumour mill is whirring about who could potentially replace the former superstar halfback at the helm at Belmore.

One of those listed by the Daily Telegraph is Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara who reached the Super League Grand Final with the French club for the first time in the club’s history back in 2021.

Now, the Dragons are currently second in the top flight with McNamara also boasting five years as England boss as well as a cameo served under Trent Robinson at the Sydney Roosters.

That being said, Daily Telegraph columnist Paul Crawley had this to say on the potential link: “Could be a really good option and he has built an outstanding resume over the years.

The trouble is taking on the Bulldogs would come with huge expectation and pressure and I’m just not sure an outsider would be ready to handle that.

“Look back at how similar pressure absolutely destroyed Anthony Seibold when he took over the Broncos. For that reason and no other I’d be looking elsewhere.”

That will be music to Catalans fans’ ears who have grown to love the Englishman as one of their own following some incredible feats in the south of France.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I'd say this united would have done no worse than sticking with Moyes instead of the turnover of managers
