Rhyse Martin: Leeds Rhinos consider appeal after back-rower banned

Leeds Rhinos are considering whether or not to appeal the one-match ban handed to Rhyse Martin which would see him miss Friday's Super League play-off trip to Catalans Dragons.

The Papua New Guinea back-rower has been charged with a Grade A high tackle offence, for a challenge on Castleford's Alex Mellor on Saturday.

If successful, Martin would be free to travel to Perpignan to play.

However, an unsuccessful appeal could also result in a longer suspension.

The Rugby Football League has the option to add further games if the appeal is deemed frivolous, which if Leeds were victorious at Catalans could rule the 29-year-old out for the semi-final or even Grand Final should they make it.

Martin has been a regular for Leeds in 2022, scoring 10 tries and kicking 85 goals in his 25 appearances.

it was Martin who got away with running into the ref and virtually handing him off a couple of games back - not even worthy of a mention in the disciplinary review

i'm guessing when it comes to the ban / appeal, if he has gotten away with one earlier in the season, then the ban will stick. if its his 1st offence, then he may get away with it on appeal

The disciplinary need to remember this is an entertainment business and people want to see the best players in the play offs. I want to see Leeds at full strength and push Catalans all the way and if they need to push his ban back until next season then fair enough. Why should Catalans benefit from a lazy tackle against Castleford.

I'm all for clamping down on head shots, but there should be some agreement with clubs for when the play offs are on. Catalans, Salford and Huddersfield weren't worried about the disciplinary panel this week as they rested most of their first team players.

Leeds Rhinos' Rhyse Martin has ban doubled after appeal deemed frivolous

The Rhinos decided to appeal the charge but have been unsuccessful

Leeds Rhinos have been stung after Rhyse Martin's ban was DOUBLED after their appeal to overturn the charge was deemed frivolous. The Rhinos made an attempt to clear their back-rower for the play-off clash with Catalans Dragons after he was given a one-match ban for a high tackle in their win over Castleford Tigers.

But their case has been deemed frivolous by the operations tribunal and rather than scrub his suspension, they have instead added an extra game. It's a bitter blow for the Rhinos who not only will now be without their goal-kicking supremo for the first round match with Catalans Dragons but also the semi-final should they be victorious in France.

Martin was charged for a high tackle that left Tigers back-rower Alex Mellor with a bloodied nose. Despite that, the referee didn't deem the incident worthy of any punishment and the video referee did not intervene. Despite that, the Match Review Panel deemed it necessary to take action against the incident.

It's fair to say that many have already expressed their astonishment at the move. Sky Sports pundit and former Leeds Rhinos player Barrie McDermott tweeted: "With absolutely no club bias that ban was very harsh, Leeds had a case to appeal… this decision is absolutely ridiculous 3 games in 15 days at the end of the year & a falling player hits the defenders arm, not the other way round, his audacity to question it ends his season!"

Leeds will name their squad for the game on Wednesday.

I’m not so sure don’t get me wrong I think Leeds are a flat average side chock full of journeymen and the odd young talent, but in smith they’ve appointed a coach who, let’s be fair about most don’t expect him to bring the glory years back,so they’re going for broke and to hell with the consequences and to me that makes them dangerous

love this bit :) :) "with absolutely no club bias"

played for Leeds and still involved at Leeds :) :)

but in all seriousness and having seen the tackle. If that warrants a ban then the game is in trouble. Yes he caught the attacker high (falling down), very little force in it and not even penalised at the game (yet another one where the ref never saw fit to penalise at the game)

if the game is going to get to the point that any minor incident is picked up on review and penlised, then may as well do away with the refs full stop and let the game be a free for all
