thats a bit of a strange one

no investment in playing squad, getting rid of best players and then sack coach who managed to turn round performances when it mattered and keep them in SL

Somethings been wrong all season long at wakey, the coach perhaps was to blame but they are in a worse position now with the players who've left they'll struggle next year

Mark Applegarth emerges as favourite to take over as Wakefield Trinity head coach

Wakefield Trinity are moving fast to appoint a new head coach following the departure of Willie Poching this week.

Poching and his assistant coach Francis Cummins were relieved of their duties on Monday following a season in which the Wakefield club found themselves in relegation danger before a remarkable turn around of fortunes in the closing weeks.

A number of names have since been linked with the head coach role, including Wakefield-born current Featherstone Rovers boss Brian McDermott, but in a surprise move the board is believed to be ready to appoint Mark Applegarth, who was part of Poching’s coaching team this year.

The Wakefield-born 37-year-old is a former Trinity player who made 47 appearances for his hometown club from 2004 to 2008.

He also had spells with York City Knights, Central Queensland Comets, in Australia, and Batley Bulldogs, before returning to Wakefield in 2016 where he has worked in a number of roles, including player performance manager and head of youth for four years.

He has also worked with the England Youth Rugby League set-up and his previous work with the club’s young players is thought to have been a factor in him being considered as head coach with the emergence of exciting young talent one of the positives to come out of Trinity in recent years.

I see that Wakefield have promoted within.
There probably hoping he will have the same effect on them like Peet had on us.

i have a feeling it will be one season too many for them and they will get relegated

it seems like a cost cutting action along with the players who have left / leaving, i think it could be the last season in the top flight and difficult for them to return

Well I think if Leigh come up(which I can imagine they will), Wakefield won’t be able to compete with them. Leigh seem to have bigger salary cap then most SL teams!

thats what i was thinking as both Leigh and Fev spent big (and made some good signings this year), but will they be able to keep hold of all the players they brought in

i do think that even with some departures they should be able to retain enough to have a stronger squad than Wakey, and the likes of Wire / Hull wont be as bad as they have been this year.
