Rugby league supporters create petition demanding urgent review of disciplinary panel

Post by josie andrews »

Supporters of the sport have grown increasingly disillusioned with the sport's handling of the disciplinary process.

A petition demanding action to “urgently review” the Rugby Football League’s disciplinary system has been signed by almost 2,000 rugby league fans following the storm of controversy surrounding Morgan Knowles’ successful appeal this week. England international Knowles, 25, was involved in an incident with Salford’s Chris Atkin during last Saturday’s Super League play-off semi-final victory, after which he was sin-binned by referee Chris Kendall.

But Saints launched a second appeal on Wednesday which proved successful – meaning he is free to play in tomorrow’s Super League Grand Final – provoking an angry response by many Leeds Rhinos supporters and disbelief in some quarters. The defending champions claimed the original conclusion by a Rugby Football League tribunal was “unreasonable” based on the evidence presented.

Many ex-players, supporters and pundits have expressed their opposition to the current disciplinary process and now one fan has begun an online petition. Chris Makin set it up two months ago, with the Knowles saga ensuring plenty of new-found support this week.

Makin said: “We, the undersigned, demand action to immediately and urgently review the Rugby Leagues disciplinary panel due to its inconsistent nature. The detrimental effect that this is having to a despairing supporter base is endangering the very nature of the game and is endangering delivering a mortal blow to an already diminished audience.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
