Salford Red Devils on verge of major boost with Paul Rowley set to commit to long-term deal

Post by josie andrews »

Rowley, a Super League coach of the year nominee is close to extending his stay at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Paul Rowley is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract with Salford Red Devils. Rugby League Live understands Rowley, who masterminded their journey to the Super League semi-finals during his first season in charge, has held advanced talks with the club in recent weeks.

An agreement is now thought to be close in a move that will tie Rowley down to the club for years to come. Nominated for Super League coach of the year, the former Leigh and Toronto coach helped the Reds punch above their weight in 2022 as they secured a sixth-placed finish. Salford subsequently defeated Huddersfield before narrowly missing out on a Grand Final space after defeat to Super League champions St Helens.

The Reds are understood to be the competition's lowest-spending side but still managed to end the campaign as Super League's second-highest scoring side. Brodie Croft was named Man of Steel while Marc Sneyd and Andy Ackers have secured their England breakthrough under Rowley's watch.

A former hooker by trade, Rowley played for England during his time on the field and had spells with Leigh, Halifax and Huddersfield. The 47-year-old turned to coaching after on-field retirement and has enjoyed success everywhere he has been. He won back-to-back Championship titles with Leigh before guiding the Wolfpack to League 1 promotion. Now, after a successful first season with Salford, he will look to kick on further despite the salary cap constraints.

They have signed the likes of Ollie Partington for next year and further additions are expected before the start of the campaign. Rowley is thought to have interest from one NRL club, but has decided to instead commit his future to Salford.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
