We shouldn’t be losing our top young talent - RL agent ‘disappointed’ in Will Pryce & Kai Pearce Paul’s NRL moves

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

But why can't we be more like football, with proper contracts and proper signing fees.

When we took KPP from London, we must have offered him a good deal, with a contract over say 5 years. If he is happy with this and the promises made he signs, if not he asks for a better deal or looks elsewhere. Then if another club wants to sign him before his contact expires, then they have to pay a fee.

And not a nominal fee like 100k, but a proper fee like £1M. We paid 440k for Offiah years ago. If they don't want to pay, then the player stays, if he's not happy then tough, he signed the deal.

So if a club does then pay £1M, then we should be able to spend this without it counting on the cap, as its pure profit. Then maybe we can start looking at making money on players then spending it on better ones.

Its called business, buy a player cheap, sell him to make a profit and use the money to better the club.

The Wigan way seems to be, buy a player cheap, spend money training him and let him go to the NRL as we don't want to stand in his way. If if no NRL club come in then let him go to Warrington or Leeds.

How does Rugby League not have "proper contracts"?

Its up to clubs if they demand a transfer fee for players currently under contract. With KPP his contract is expiring so there is no issue there.

If his contract wasn't expiring the club would either:
1 - Demand a fee
2 - Decide they don't want or cannot get a fee

Of course clubs could demand £1m in transfer fees but nobody would pay that so if you are suggesting high fees as a method of not allowing contracted players to leave early, the contract itself is enough...

The other issue that you have though is the choice between holding players to their contract versus having an unhappy player who may cause disruption and unrest in the team and under perform.
