Major update on Super League club’s stadium as football team issue statement

Post by josie andrews »

Salford Red Devils have received an update on the status of their current home, the AJ Bell Stadium, with the city council having purchased the stadium outright.

The Super League side had been at the mercy of a potential stadium takeover involving Sale Sharks and football league club Salford City FC who had tried to purchase the AJ Bell as a joint venture.

However Salford City Council have now purchased the stadium outright themselves and stated that Salford City FC “wouldn’t be considered”.

Where this leaves the Red Devils is unclear but the League 2 football side posted an update on their website referencing their surprise at the decision.

A statement on the Salford City FC website said as follow.

“We would like to provide an update on our proposed move to the AJ Bell Stadium.

As supporters are all aware we have been in talks with Salford City Council for 18 months to purchase the AJ Bell Stadium.

“However, we were informed in the last two weeks by Salford City Council that they will now purchase the Stadium outright and that we wouldn’t be considered.

“Whilst this news came as a surprise to us, we will continue to monitor closely the progression of the purchase, but at this moment our immediate future is to remain at The Peninsula Stadium.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
