Potentially a big update in Channel 4’s coverage of Super League as privatisation decision made

Post by josie andrews »

Back when Boris Johnson was Prime Minister, he proposed the privatisation of Channel 4 which was heavily backed by then Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries.

Dorries famously got rugby league and rugby union mixed up in a speech ahead of the Rugby League World Cup ahead in 2022 when she remembered he favourite rugby league memory was when Jonny Wilkinson won the 2003 Rugby Union World Cup for England.

However, after helping get the wheels turning on this privatisation, now it is set to be scrapped by new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in one of the major moves by the new Prime Minister after reports emerged that he also wanted students to study maths all the way to the age of 18.

Now, reports are emerging that he wants to scrap this privatisation plan which, according to the Daily Record, current Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan does not back.

This could have repercussions for Super League after Channel 4 began showing games last season and will again provide coverage in 2023 after their coverage was well loved last year with Adam Hills and Helen Skelton both impressed.

The privatisation threw a spanner into the works in terms of if the plan to cover Super League would continue beyond 2023 but now that things are remaining the same, it seems Channel 4 will show Super League as long as they want which will please fans.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
