Wigan Warriors Grand Final hero latest to leave role in rugby union because of Leeds Rhinos legend

Post by josie andrews »

Former Warrington Wolves, St Helens and Wigan Warriors centre Martin Gleeson has been the latest former rugby league player to be relieved of his position with England rugby union with the RFU confirming his departure from his role as Attack Coach tonight.

Gleeson joined from Wasps in 2021, where he had been attack coach since 2019. He enjoyed a successful rugby league playing career, where he represented both Great Britain and England.

Gleeson said: “It’s been a pleasure to represent my country again and to work with this group of players. I wish them all the best this coming year.”

The 42-year-old also played for Huddersfield Giants, St Helens, Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, Hull FC and Salford Red Devils – winning the Super League twice (2002 and 2010) and the Challenge Cup in 2004.

He famously crossed for a decisive brace against St Helens in the 2010 Super League Grand Final where he was the hero.

He moved into coaching with Salford in 2014, before joining Wasps.

RFU executive director of performance rugby Conor O’Shea, added: “We’d like to thank Martin for his contribution and hard work at England Rugby and we wish him the very best for the future.”

He becomes the latest player to leave following a shake up of the England coaching set up as Leicester Tigers boss Steve Borthwick takes charge bringing Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield into the fold with him in a move that has seen the likes of former Hull FC coach Brett Hodgson leave as well as former Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors and Widnes Vikings hooker Jon Clarke who is set to leave according to the Daily Mail.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
