Disciplinary loophole closed by RFL as Super League stars could miss Round One

Post by josie andrews »

Warrington Wolves star signing Josh McGuire may not be available for Warrington Wolves’ opening fixture against Leeds Rhinos on February 16th after he was seemingly shown a red card today during Warrington Wolves’ 22-10 win over Leigh Leopards.

It is as of now a mystery why McGuire was sent off but the incident that saw McGuire leave the field not to be replaced came after man of the day Ben Currie celebrated the last try four minutes from time.

It was Currie’s testimonial and his and Peter Mata’utia’s late tries turned a 10-10 stalemate into a win for the Wolves but the Wire have been left concerned by the red card to star signing McGuire though no one is quite sure why the World Cup winning loose-forward was sent from the field.

McGuire was a key signing in revitalising the Wolves pack as Daryl Powell looks to build a new loom middle at Warrington in 2023.

The loose-forward of course takes on the number 13 shirt for the 2023 season but now may not feature against the Rhinos in Super League’s first game of 2023 in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Hull KR will be sweating on the availability of star forward Elliot Minchella after he was yellow carded for a danger throw on Richie Myler. Now both Warrington Wolves after Josh McGuire’s red card and Hull KR have reason to worry. Lachlan Coote was later sin binned for his part in an altercation after he copped a head high tackle from Aidan Sezer which saw the Leeds halfback sin binned as well.

Thus, all three clubs will be sweating on this week’s disciplinary which could see these three miss Round One.

It will be a long wait too with the disciplinary panel meeting on Thursday to determine any charges as confirmed to Serious About Rugby League by an RFL spokesperson.

They also said that any appeals that arise from this will be accepted until 11am on the following Tuesday.

This means any suspension picked up this week will be served the weekend after next – the first weekend of the Super League season.

Thus, should any Leeds player receive a ban, it cannot be served in this weekend’s friendly against Hunslet and the same goes for Warrington Wolves ahead of their game against North Wales Crusaders on Friday.

Super League Match Review Panel changes explained as player suspensions altered

The Match Review Panel will meet today to check if any incidents in the weekend's pre-season games were worthy of suspension.

Hull Kingston Rovers, Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos and will today discover whether they face any potential disciplinary action ahead of the new Super League campaign. The Match Review Panel will examine last weekend’s final pre-season games before Super League kicks off next Thursday when Warrington host Leeds at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The MRP will determine whether any player who committed an offence last weekend will be fined or miss the first round of Super League fixtures. The MRP will determine the Grade, if any, of the offences and issue fines, cautions or suspensions accordingly.

Significantly, changes to the disciplinary system were passed through in December following a review into procedures for dealing with On-Field Misconduct carried out in consultation with clubs. Grade A offences no longer carry a suspension while Grade B offences could now only result in a fine depending on past disciplinary records and other factors.

James Donaldson recently became the first player to be adjudged on the tweaked disciplinary rulings that have been implemented for the 2023 season. The Leeds Rhinos forward charged with a grade B offence following his sin-binning against Wakefield Trinity on Boxing Day following a tackle on Oliver Pratt. The Match Review Panel charged Donaldson with a Grade B offence dangerous throw which last year would have earned him a one or two-game ban. Instead, he was issued with a £250 fine, but not suspended.

In addition, it will now take three offences for a player to reach the top end of each grading boundary, compared with two offences in 2022. Only Grade E and F offences will now lead to an automatic tribunal, with Grade A-D offences included within the penalty notice framework. Grade D offences will carry a suspension range of 2-3 matches and will include a fine.

Ten sides were in action last weekend, but it will be Daryl Powell, Rohan Smith and Willie Peters most concerned as they could all be left short for their season openers.

In Ben Currie’s Warrington Wolves testimonial against Leigh Leopards, debutant Josh McGuire was sent off for dissent. The Wire won 22-10 over Leigh but McGuire was sent off for an incident in the aftermath of a try from his new teammate Currie. Coach Powell said he was unsure exactly what was said by McGuire but the MRP will conduct a full review this week.

Over at Craven Park, two Hull KR players were sent to the sin bin in their 26-4 victory over Leeds while Rhino Aidan Sezer faced the same action for a high shot on Lachlan Coote as he fell to the floor. Coote was also sin binned for his reaction in the most explosive incident from last weekend’s pre-season fixtures. Returning from an ankle injury, Hull KR’s Elliot Minchella was sent to the bin earlier on in the game for a high tackle on Richie Myler.

Warrington come up against Leeds in their season starter at the Halliwell Jones Stadium a week tonight while Hull KR host Matt Peet's Wigan in Channel 4's first televised game of the Super League season two days later. The Match Review Panel will revert to meeting on their traditional day of Monday from the start of the season after dealing with pre-season friendlies today.

And it appears that striking is no longer an automatic ban!
