Brodie Croft's record Salford Red Devils contract explained - wages, release clause, salary cap

Croft has signed the longest contract in the history of Super League.

Salford Red Devils have made history after tying down Man of Steel halfback Brodie Croft to the longest contract in Super League history. The club has announced that Croft has put pen to paper on a deal until the end of 2030. Here's all you need to know about the deal.

How long is the deal?

Despite 2030 being mentioned, Croft's new contract is, initially at least, a four-year contract extension that keeps him at the club until the end of 2027. He was already contracted for the current campaign but this new deal means he will be with the club for the next eight seasons should the option be activated to extend it.4

Is he now a marquee player?

Yes, the contract in place has now seen him become a marquee player, meaning he is earning at least £175,000 per season. It is the first time in Salford's history they have used the marquee player rule.

Is there an NRL release clause?

Yes. Croft would be granted permission to speak and sign for an NRL club if they were to meet the valuation Salford have put in his contract. That figure is not known but is said to be a substantial six-figure fee. For some context, Salford weren't thought to be considering selling Croft to St George Illawarra Dragons unless they were willing to pay a fee close to the world-record £700,000 figure New Zealand Warriors paid for Sam Tomkins.

What is Salford's salary cap spend and have they got a new backer?

As it stands, Salford are one of the lowest spenders in Super League and currently run on a salary cap spend in the region of £1.9 million. That's £200,000 below the £2.1 figure in place. Salford don't have any new investment at this stage, however, they are actively pursuing new commercial partnerships that would generate more income.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
