Super League Stat Attack - Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves stars lead after round four

Post by josie andrews »

In a new weekly feature, we're going to crunch the numbers from every round of action to see which individuals are having a big impact.

The fourth round of the Super League season has been and gone and certain players have clocked up big numbers since the season began. Here are the top performers in key metrics.

Tries

Wigan Warriors' flying winger Liam Marshall is out in front with eight tries. He is averaging two a game so far. Catalans Dragons' new recruit Tom Johnstone is in second place with 5. Adam Swift, Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Josh Charnley all have four to their name.

Tries assists

Continuing the form he showed for England in the Rugby League World Cup, Warrington halfback George Williams is a dream teammate at the moment. He currently has seven try assists to his name. Man of Steel Brodie Croft and Wigan's Harry Smith are just behind him with six.

Tackles

Joint-bottom of the league, Wakefield Trinity have been doing a lot of defending in recent weeks. Their forward, Jai Whitbread, has made the most tackles with 179. Morgan Smithies of Wigan is just eight behind him, with Cameron Smith on 159 tackles and Brad Fash with 156.

Missed Tackles

Hull KR's Mikey Lewis has fallen off the most defensive attempts after four rounds. Rovers' mercurial halfback has 25 missed tackles and will want to get off the leaderboard in the coming weeks. Castleford duo Kenny Edwards and Liam Watts have let 24 and 20 attackers pass them by, which sums up what's happening in the Tigers camp at the moment.

Tackle Busts

Samoan bulldozer Tim Lafai is proving to be the hardest man to stop in Super League. He has an astonishing 36 tackle busts to his name. To put that into perspective, the main behind him, Daryl Clark, has 23. George Williams makes another list with 20.

Carries

The grafters, and an underrated aspect of rugby league. Leigh captain John Asiata is leading from the front and has racked up 98 runs already. That man Williams again is included with 97, with halfbacks Jacob Miller and Marc Sneyd behind the leading duo with 86 and 81, respectively.

Errors

Adding insult to Wakefield's poor start, their star player makes the top of the error list. Mason Lino has coughed up the ball nine times, and so has Jai Field of Wigan Warriors. Gareth Widdop, Richie Myler, Bevan French, Jake Clifford and Tom Briscoe all have made eight errors.

Metres

Leigh Leopards' scalp of St Helens shocked the rugby league world, and it's one of their key players who have made the most inroads in attack. Josh Charnley has ran 745 metres with the ball. Behind him? You called it, George Williams with 630 and Liam Marshall with 621.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
