Super League Stat Attack - the star performers from round six

Post by josie andrews »

We crunch the numbers to see which individuals had a big impact this week.

The sixth round of the Super League season has been and gone and certain players have left their mark. Here are the top performers in a number of key metrics.

Note: the stats from Huddersfield Giants' game with St Helens have not yet been published so are not included. The article will be amended if/when they are published

Tries
It was a good weekend for Josh Charnley. The winger not only scored a hat-trick, but that also makes him Super League's joint-top scorer. The Leigh winger has enjoyed a fantastic start to the season.

Round Leaders: Josh Charnley (3), five others (2)
Overall Leaders: Liam Marshall, Josh Charnley & Tom Johnstone (8)

Assists
Sticking with Leigh, Gareth O'Brien is now also a joint leader with his two assists at the weekend putting him level with seven for the season. Mikey Lewis and Blake Austin had excellent games for their teams too, assisting twice.

Round Leaders: Mikey Lewis, Blake Austin & Gareth O'Brien (2)
Overall Leaders: George Williams, Harry Smith & Gareth O'Brien (7)

Tackles
Smaller numbers in the tackle department than recent weeks, but Ethan Havard comes out on top with an impressive 47. Cameron Smith's solid start to the year continued and he's not far off being Super League's leading tackler for the season now.

Round Leaders : Ethan Havard (47), Adam Milner (43), Cameron Smith (42)
Overall Leaders: Morgan Smithies (254), Cameron Smith & Jai Whitbread (241)

Missed tackles
Castleford's Alex Mellor was part of a Tigers side crushed by Warrington, so it's no surprise to see one of their players in here. Micky McIlorum is a surprise inclusion in the overall chart, he missed six tackles against Leeds.

Round Leaders : Alex Mellor (9), Edwin Ipape (7) eight others (6)
Overall Leaders: Mikey Lewis (31), Micky McIlorum (29), Liam Watts (28)

Tackle busts
Bevan French flies into the top three after a round-high eleven tackle busts against
Salford Red Devils. He's clawed back ground on Tim Lafai, who didn't play last week.

Round Leaders : Bevan French (11), Andre Savelio (10), Arthur Mourgue (9)
Overall Leaders: Tim Lafai (38), Bevan French (32), Nene Macdonald & Arthur Mourgue (31)

Carries
The halfbacks dominate this department with four halfbacks from four different clubs leading the way over the weekend. William and Lam, co-leaders for the round, are also first and third respectively over the course of the season.

Round Leaders : George Williams & Lachlan Lam (28), Mason Lino & Mitchell Pearce (24)
Overall Leaders: George Williams (145), John Asiata (136), Lachlan Lam (129)

Metres made
It was a barmy afternoon for Rhyse Martin on Saturday. A wonder try, a try-gifting error and five missed conversions. On top of all that, he joined the 200-metre club with a mammoth effort!

Round Leaders : Rhyse Martin (213), Jai Field (189), Bevan French (185)
Overall Leaders: Paul Vaughan (1011), Josh Charnley (989), Liam Marshall (889)

Errors
No standout here with a stack of players all making three. The aforementioned Martin is top of the season table.

Round Leaders : Thirteen others (3)
Overall Leaders: Rhyse Martin (12), Mason Lino, Bevan French & Jai Field (11)

Offloads
Toby King has gone about his business quietly since moving to Wigan but he was the most prolific offloader of the round.
Esan Marsters remains top while Kai O'Donnell, who offloaded three times against Hull FC, is now second.

Round Leaders : Toby King (4) Six others (3)
Overall Leaders: Esan Marsters (13), Kai O'Donnell (12), Jack Weslby, Toby King 11 & Julian Bousquet (11).

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I wonder if "offloads" equals "successful offloads" ?

Paul Vaughans metres made is impressive.
That’s the kind of prop we are missing
