David Fifita set to answer Wakefield Trinity's SOS with shock return on the cards

Post by josie andrews »

Wakefield Trinity are lining up a stunning return for former fan favourite Dave Fifita. Rugby League Live can reveal the struggling Super League outfit have turned to the Big Bopper as they look to turn their season around.

Fifita, 33, spent over seven seasons at Wakefield, solidifying himself as a firm favourite during his time at the club before departing at the end of the season. But after a grand farewell at the end of last year, he now appears set to make a shock return to the club for the remainder of the season. It will be a huge boost for Wakefield, with Fifita a larger-than-life character during his previous spell in the competition.

Wakefield do currently use all their quota spots and will have to move accordingly to fit Fifita into their squad, but the prop does appear set for a shock return in the coming weeks. He joined Wakefield during the 2016 season and went on to make 141 appearances for the club. Since his return to Australia, Fifita has played for Entrance Tigers in the Central Coast Division.

Wakefield are currently bottom of Super League having lost their opening twelve games of the league season. They are four points adrift of safety and their local rivals, Castleford Tigers. They make the trip to France to take on Catalans Dragons this week before playing Leigh Leopards at Magic Weekend.

It's unclear when Fifita is expected to arrive in the UK but Wakefield will hope he can steer them away from what, at present, appears to be a likely relegation. The club has also recently bolstered their squad through the arrival of former centre Jack Croft.

wakefield Trinity hero David Fifita’s remarkable Super League return confirmed

WAKEFIELD TRINITY hero David Fifita’s remarkable Super League return has been confirmed by his twin brother, Andrew.

David has been heavily linked with a move back to Belle Vue in a bid to help Trinity stave off relegation after a dismal start to the 2023 Super League season.

Wakefield currently sit bottom of the table with no win in 13 games whilst Fifita has been helping out local rugby league side Entrance Tigers back in Australia.

However, with Trinity head coach Mark Applegarth confirming that the club was in talks with Fifita about a sensational return, David’s twin brother Andrew – who at one point in 2021 was also linked with a move to Wakefield – confirming that David is on his way to “save” the West Yorkshire club.

Andrew posted on Instagram: “Off to save @wtrinityrl 🏳️ 🆘 Good luck @david_fifita. Good luck @superleague the Bopper is heading home to Wakey 🔵⚪️🔴
