Academy Origin II: Yorkshire 32 Lancashire 32

Post by josie andrews »

Leeds Rhinos centre Jack Smith converted a 78th minute try by centre partner Louix Gorman to give Yorkshire a share of the spoils from a keenly contested Academy Origin match at Hull KR’s Sewell Group Craven Park stadium on Saturday.

Just two minutes earlier St Helens winger Owen Dagnall looked to have sealed the match – and the series – with his second try, only for Rovers centre Gorman to keep the Lancashire champagne on ice until game three at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday 18 August.

Yorkshire, resoundingly beaten 40-22 at Castleford in the first of this year’s matches, had raced into a point-a-minute 20-0 lead in the first quarter with tries from Rhinos trio Jack Smith, Joe Phillips and Neil Tchamambe, plus another from Wakefield Trinity’s Ethan Wood and two Gorman conversions.

Dagnall grabbed his first to finally open Lancashire’s account on 26 minutes, and further efforts from Wigan Warriors’ Taylor Kerr and fellow backrower Nolan Tupaea of Warrington narrowed the deficit to 18-20 at half time.

Jack Smith extended Yorkshire’s lead with his second try soon after the break, but tries from Wigan Warriors three-quarters Noah Hodkinson and Nathan Lowe, and Dagnall’s 76th minute effort looked to have settled matters – before homeboy Gorman’s kept Yorkshire interest in the series alive with a dramatic intervention at the death.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
