Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Wigan in the USA?

Post by dawbz »

Can anyone answer a question for me please?.
It's going back a few years when Wigan played exhibition matches in the USA early 1980s.
Wich other british clubs went over with them and who did wigan play? thanks in advance.

Wigan played Widnes, and we played in a yellow shirt. I still have it somewhere.

We played Warrington in 1989, it was in Millwalkee. We played in a baseball stadium and the pitch was very narrow so the match was very low scoring. I think we played in an all red kit with two narrow white V's for some reason (or perhaps I'm thinking of a lancashire kit :conf: )

There are stories about the guys who set it up here:

Mike is correct. I have a flag from the stadium. The game is famous for Les Boyd chasing Ellery around the pitch threatening him for 80 mins. He never got near him though.

Les Boyd came out of retirement for that game didnt he? I heard that the games was just really a organised fight to get the yanks involved.

It was a cock up. A guy called Mike Mayer kept trying to get league going in the USA BUT he was full of hot air.

There is a USA Rugby League going now it's called AMNRL. Some new teams have joined since it started including New Haven Warriors, Jacksonville Axemen and Boston Braves.

Also noticed on the AMNRL site:
