Happy Pie Day!

Post by Fraggle »

Apparently today is National Pie Day over there in the US of A. Quite why they have a pie day but Wigan (as far as I know) doesn't, but I guess we can join in the celebrations as well...

I thought I waz writing in authentic American Englizh, adding a bit of color to the place... But I have to agree that such language probably shouldn't be allowed here, and it worries me that in many parts of the world, when they teach people English they are infact teaching them American instead. I remember hearing an English-language teaching radio programme in Taiwan where it was suggested that British English was far less important than "normal" English. Presumably there was no mention of Shakespeare on that radio programme...

The British like to have a go at Americans for not speaking proper English but most people in England no longer speak propa' English.

I don't expect or really want people to speak in the posh way that Americans think the English speak but I find it harder and harder to understand some of the phrases that people say because they are just random words in any order.

I hear a lot of people say things like "Wigan won Hull FC in the last match of last year" when really they should say "Wigan beat Hull FC in the last match of last year". Saying 'won' implies that Wigan get to keep Hull FC, like a team can win the challenge cup and the worst thing is many people don't understand why it is wrong.

was watching Fox news yesterday (dont ask why) and saw that a few republican candidates or senators were pushing through a bill to make English their national language and other such related language topics through their government.

strange.,

I can't see them succeeding with this. It would surely set a bad example for them to have a President who was incapable of speaking their national language...

The Americanisation (or Americanization; depending on which side of the "pond" you are standing) of the English Language is surely something to do with the amount of people that use Microsoft Word as their default word processor?
