I got the impression that (please don't take this the wrong way) you didn't fully understand or possibly couldn't comprehend the amount of abuse that we (Rugby fans) receive every single day. It's not only youth's or kids but grown men of 40 or 50 who have families themselves.
I fully understand what you mean - I work as a doorman and am no stranger to abuse. A week ago a woman who is nearly old enough to be my Mother spent 20 minutes screaming abuse at me for refusing to let her into the bar that I work in. I have seen school teachers launch into unprovoked attacks on random people. Like you said - it would be interesting to see if these people would be in work if their employers knew what they were really like.

When I was a lot younger (:( )I used to date a girl who was studying in Cardiff and I often had to suffer abuse and threats for being English. I once had the privilege of listening to Welsh soccer fans sing anti-English songs in a bar when their team was playing Holland!

As you said; responding to the small minded idiots who act like this will only ever make things worse. I have heard many times (on here - or when I've visited Wigan for matches) how bad it can be and my fear is that someone will get badly hurt. I don't particularly worry about myself - it's the thought of someone either young or old getting beaten up by a gang of morons.

I agree entirely. Since my wife and I have had our daughter, my whole perspective on life has changed. I am not worried about myself, after extensively studdying the martial arts and a brief rugby career, I think I can take care of myself. If not I have still got a surprising turn of pace.
But my fears for my Wifes and my Daughters well being are sometimes almost overwhelming.
I must admit that it isn't just Football fans who behave like morons.
The other week at the wigan and Saints match, the hostility in the stands was worse than I have ever seen before. In the 20 years that I have been going to watch Wigan, I have never experienced the level of animosity shown by some wigan fans towards the saints fans and the ref and saints players.
There was one clueless idiot stood on the back row in the East Stand who was constanl swearing. A gentleman 4 or 5 rows in front of him was sat with his very young son, he turned round and asked (politely) if the lad at the back could tone it down. Instead of being mature and toning down his language. The fool at the back started swearing more and more in an antangonising manner. The man eventually left with about 25 mins of the game left. There were lots of instances like this and it is something that we can do without in our game. I can swear as much as anyone, it was just part of everyday vocabulary when I was in the Army, but there is definately a time and place for bad language and I don't think it is at a rugby match. Especially when the sport prides itself on its "family game".
Anyway, I digress, it is only a matter of time before someone gets badly beaten or worse. This would give both teams much publidity of the sort that they really don't want.

I heard from a latics fan that warriors are up for sale.
A very bitter latics fan, who obviously can't take the fact that they are in a lot of trouble down at the bottom of the premiership.

Definitely the best way to deal with them, although I do wonder sometimes if my sense of humour is compatible with theirs. Still, if they don't think I'm funny then it's no different to how Johnny Vegas makes his career - I've never met anyone who finds him funny at all yet he's still considered a comedian...

:eusa2: good post spot on with the swearing their is a time and place in front of young kids isnt one of them , but it seems to be happening more and more in all walks of life not just at sporting events if the swearing is so blatant the stewards should warn and then if it continues evict the culprits .

the latics fan who pointed this out is simply stating the truth! every club is for sale if the money is right. even wigan athletic! every player has his price to. if wigan asked leeds to sell them rob burrows they would say he's not for sale. if we told them we will give you 2 million pounds for him he would be in our squad next week. now if the question is "we are to be sold in the next couple of weeks" then i would have to disagree.

Can anyone answer why the Latics truely hate the Warriors??

.........They ramble on constantly that MO is the reason behind their hatred ... back in the day when they were struggling they came in for help and high flying WRLFC told them to 'Go Away' (or words to that affect) :D :D . Me mates Dad even states he used to support WRLFC before this happened.

Your thoughts!! :o
My understanding is that the hatred goes back to a Latics v Liverpool League Cup tie in the 1980s.

3 or 4 years ago, I was watching the Turkey v England football match in the Orange House on King Street with a bunch of mates, including a Latics fan. A p!ssed up lad appeared who my Latics fan mate knew and he introduced us. This lad was about 20 years old and full of hatred towards Wigan Rugby.

His story was that Latics drew Liverpool at home and the Latics board went "cap in hand" to Mo begging for the tie to take place at Central Park. He added (stumbling about by now) that Mo was worried that Latics would get a big crowd at Central Park and, therefore, said no.

After listening to his cr@p, I told him the proper story. Latics did draw Liverpool in the cup and did approach Wigan Rugby about playing the tie at Central Park.

Wigan Rugby considered the matter and discovered that to host the tie would mean:

- Erecting permanent fencing to segregate the 2 sets of fans (including a no-mans land)

- Erecting a fence at the Kop end to prevent the away fans from getting onto the pitch (as in most football grounds at that time)

- Segregating the seating

Wigan obviously declined the offer, especially since these fences would have remained following the football match.

The lad replied "cheers mate" and correctly sensed that the time was right to move on to bugging someone else.

The thing that struck me about this lad was that he was probably in a baby walker when Latics drew Liverpool in this cup-tie, but this story of hatred has been handed down from father to son and got more and more distorted.

IIRC, the tie was eventually switched to Anfield.

BTW, the other reason that we are hated is based on our success :D

The words 'chip' and 'shoulder' go hand-in-hand with lads like him. As you say, he doesn't even remember the incident in question, let alone know the true story. But that doesn't really matter. Since Latics were promoted to the professional ranks, several generations of their supporters have grown up under a delusion that if Wigan RL were removed from the equation, Wigan Athletic would rise to the position of sporting prominence that they deserve and have been cruelly and unfaily denied for so long.

Some time around 1993, a guy at work showed us a fanzine that was produced by a bunch of Latics supporters. It only came out bi-monthly, but almost the entirety of this edition had been given over to slagging off Wigan RL's latest big-name signing, who happened to be Inga. The guy who had it was a Latics fan, but possibly because the rest of us were Wigan RL followers, he usually kept this low-key and on this occasion was quite apologetic about the zine. I asked him if Latics fans didn't have anything else - anything related to Wigan Athletic perhaps - that they might be able to put in their fan mags instead. He replied that, to the people who produced this mag, hatred of Wigan RL was almost as important as love for Wigan Athletic, and that it was a constant topic of conversation among them.

When pressed, he couldn't explain why this was. He acknowledged that there was no direct rivalry between the clubs. They could never play each other for example, they played at different times so there was no clash of interest. All he could think was that this irrational hatred had been handed down from father to son, and that, though it was based completely on mythology, it was now an integral part of Wigan Athletic culture and probably would remain so.

He was right. That was 14 years ago. Since then, Wigan Athletic have enjoyed the benefit of the Premiership, but still many of them divide their attention into 50% supporting their team and 50% hating ours. How can you deal with a mentality like that?
