NO EXCUSES NOW TO NOT TO LET OUR YOUNGSTERS SHINE
GO WIGAN GO
1)Arguably the best set up in Rugby League for training up young players
2)More stars created for other teams than any other club e.g Wild Aspul & Brisco. This must stop
3)No relagation from next season so no excuses for blooding young players in the first team.If they are good enough they are old enough.
4)Not the same pressure to bring in players in the Autum of their carears, although some bought out experience will always be needed.
5)Wigan have always been at their best when at least eight or nine of the first team are home bred

Re: NO EXCUSES NOW TO NOT TO L...
Everything you said absolutly right... except you spelled Autumn wrong.
Re: NO EXCUSES NOW TO NOT TO L...
Except, as I posted somewhere else on here a couple of days ago, this last couple of seasons we have had 8 or 9 players in the squad from the Wigan Academy, at time when we have been flirting with relegation and had some appalling performances against the likes of Hull KR (perhaps we needed something to balance out the brilliance of games like the Bradford play-off!). But this belief that Wigan have not been playing our own youngsters in recent years is just not correct, we have long been doing just what you suggest.jimofwigan posted:

I agree with some of that, but not points 2 and 5.jimofwigan posted:

2. I'd hardly call the likes of Wilde, Aspinwall (I assume you meant) and Briscoe "stars". The only star we've let go in recent years is Long, and there were other reasons for that!
5. Simply not true, as I've stated elsewhere (assuming by "home-bred" you mean Wiganers rather than British, as the rest of your points seem to suggest). Take a look how many Wiganers were in the "Grand Slam" team of 94/95.
Re: NO EXCUSES NOW TO NOT ...
And whilst I wasn't interested in the sport at the time, didn't this transfer actually take place some time before he became a star? He'd only made a handful of appearances for Wigan at that time (4, according to Wikipedia).GeoffN posted:

Re: NO EXCUSES NOW TO NOT ...
Fraggle, Long is far more complicated than people ever realise. He was readily identified as a future star halfback throughout the junior ranks. Interestingly, so was Bobby Goulding and Craig Murdock. He was being fast tracked by Wigan and looked very good. He was the nearest thing I saw to say Jason Robinson in his ability to change direction. He then suffered an horrific injury. Not 100% on this BUT I think he needed a full knee reconstruction. When he returned, his knee was heavily strapped and he was nothing like the pre injury player.
Wigan if I remember rightly had several halfbacks. They chose to let Long go. Nobody from the top flight was interested which somewhat vindicates the decision Wigan took. He adjusted to his new physical limits / regained his confidence at Widnes. Saints went for him when it was established he was going to be okay long term and the rest is well known.
Unless you have a crystal ball, Sean Long story will always exist. Scott Naylor was exactly the same.
