NO EXCUSES NOW TO NOT TO LET OUR YOUNGSTERS SHINE

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Fraggle, Long is far more complicated than people ever realise. He was readily identified as a future star halfback throughout the junior ranks. Interestingly, so was Bobby Goulding and Craig Murdock. He was being fast tracked by Wigan and looked very good. He was the nearest thing I saw to say Jason Robinson in his ability to change direction. He then suffered an horrific injury. Not 100% on this BUT I think he needed a full knee reconstruction. When he returned, his knee was heavily strapped and he was nothing like the pre injury player.

Wigan if I remember rightly had several halfbacks. They chose to let Long go. Nobody from the top flight was interested which somewhat vindicates the decision Wigan took. He adjusted to his new physical limits / regained his confidence at Widnes. Saints went for him when it was established he was going to be okay long term and the rest is well known.

Unless you have a crystal ball, Sean Long story will always exist. Scott Naylor was exactly the same.
I'm so glad we don't have him and glad we never got him back. I don't like his attitude at all. Long and Tommy Martyn are top of my most despised list.

Yeah I remember discussing him with my dad at the time, We'd just seen him play at (if I remember correctly) Salford (?) and he had a look about him that neither of us liked. He's more suited to football overall but I think St's like that type of player. Cocky little p..ck!!

Yep. never liked Blobby Goulding either, for much the same reasons.

My thoughts on him, and it was some time ago.

Yes he did need a knee operation (not sure of the extent of his damage thought). Did fully recover, but was involved in an unsavoury incident which (allegedly) involved him punching a female driver, he accused of attempting to "run him over", on a night out in Standish.

At that time, ANY player with an "off-field" indiscretion like this was shipped off. I remember a prop who was also released after being charged with assaulting his girlfriend!

Long, if I can remember, didn't play anymore than 10 or so games for Widnes (he was already back in action in the Wigan reserves at that time - Edwards and Gregory being the incumbent halves). The Stains where after signing him, but would not pay Wigan any transfer deal (even at that time, relations were poor between the two clubs).

Long came before Robinson (who incidentally, did not play many times for the reserves - unlike Longy). At that time, IMO Long was going to be a brilliant replacement for Edwards at Stand-off. Andy Goodway, the Academy Coach, thought that Jason Robinson would be the "new" Ellery Hanley, and played him out of his favoured Stand-off position (where he had played ALL season) and moved him to Loose forward, where he had little impact in the very first Academy Cup Final.

But a total gentleman off the pitch. I hated him as a player but what a guy away from the game(so to speak) :)
