just rememberd another ex sprinter turned rugby league player. mcdonald bailey. i think he was from jamaica and signed for leigh. got a big hit in one of his early games and quickly retired.
Re: Who was the fastest wi...
though he didn't play for us, i seem to recall Lee Oudenryan (SP) being a wee bit nippy
Re: Who was the fastest wi...
None of them would touch Offiah
Re: Who was the fastest wi...
if you shouted fight a certain k.skerret was pretty quick

English by birth. Wigan by the grace of God.
Re: Who was the fastest wi...
Offiah was fast but there have been several faster. What separated Offiah from say Mark Preston was his body swerve and long stride length. As others have mentoned speed alone is not enough. MxDonald Bailey and others proved that. I think Ade Mafe who was electric over 60 metres was the last athlete to try in this country. Locally Trevor Painter was very fast and played for Pats at junior level. He now coaches athletics.
For Wigan, before my time but Trevor Lake looked fast and damn stylish. Not sure how quick Nordgren was but he seemed like a flyer. More recently we had Henley Smith as already mentioned and once he got going Ray Mordt was fast. I was told by a knowledgable source that Lydon and Smyth are the 2 Wiganers who were fastest at school level.

Difficult to compare players from different eras; Boston was faster than just about anyone, in those days, but dunno how he'd fare against modern players. My hunch is that today's players are fitter and faster.

I remember Offiah running round ET in Aus the game Mike Greg went the full length.
Offiah always seemed to have another gear as he could keep the gap over anyone.
