Just heard DW on GMR, he said the Warriors will be affected if things don't work out. This morning a spokesperson for the latics said the warriors wouldn't be affected. It seems even those in charge don't actually know what is going on.
The police spent half the interview on GMR yesterday saying Wigan RL would not be affected.

It is because there are no police at Warriors games! The stewards and they alone look after the "policing".

Also according to the police the reason for costs beng high to Latics is down to their away following.

Apparently when they go away the hooligan element cause trouble with rival fans and those rival fans come to Wigan for the return game looking for revenge.

Latics sell tickets on match days so away fans could get into the areas designated for the home fans.

So the police think there is a greater risk of trouble at Latics than other games when certain teams visit who have also a repuation for trouble e.g. Leeds.

The police charge the same per policeman as they do to other GMP area clubs but deploy more of them for Latics games.

It is hard to see how Whelan can argue against this as it is a judgement call from the police and making such calls is what they are paid to do. They would certainly be in trouble of they under-policed the games and there was a riot.

Whelan when interviews did say the small numner of arrests at games since Latics moved to the JJB proved the police were over reacting but he failed to grasp the idea that the high police presence may well have prevented trouble kicking off in the first place.

Wigan Warriors don't expect to be affected by the issue involving Greater Manchester Police and the JJB Stadium. As has been publicised there is an ongoing problem over policing costs with the football club and there have been suggestions that if the police withdraw their services to the football it may also have an effect on the rugby, this is not the case.

The ground for Warriors games is not policed but stewarded. Added to that the club have an unblemished record as far as crowd control is concerned as indeed does Rugby League as a whole. The police have agreed that our stewards are of a required standard to steward our own games.

With the clubs excellent record and the fact Warriors already operate without a police presence there is no evidence as to why Wigan Warriors matches will be affected and fans can continue to enjoy their Rugby League.
