Lowes eyes Warrington job

Post by josie andrews »

FORMER Great Britain hooker James Lowes has thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant Warrington coaching job.

The ex-Leeds and Bradford player has been placed in temporary charge of the Wolves since the departure of Paul Cullen a week ago and has been busy preparing the side for Sunday's engage Super League game at Harlequins.

But he revealed for the first time that, after serving as assistant coach to both Cullen and previously to Karl Harrison at Salford, he believes he is ready to take on the role of head coach.

"I think you'd be daft not to want the position," he said. "It's a very ambitious club with quality players.

"There's always stuff to learn and opportunities to work with certain people but certainly learning as a front man would probably be the time to do that.

"I definitely feel I'm ready for it."

Re: Lowes eyes Warrington job/ Wolves hunt McDermott

WARRINGTON could make a move to recruit Brian McDermott as their new coach.

Wolves parted company with Paul Cullen last week after a a run of six defeats in seven games.

Number two James Lowes has been given a caretaker role and will be in charge for Sunday’s trip to Harlequins - the team currently coached by McDermott.

But Warrington are understood to be keen to appoint a gaffer who is already established as a head coach.

They have already been turned down by St Helens boss Daniel Anderson.

The Aussie told them he is sticking by plans to return home when he quits Saints at the end of the season.

And it is understood that they have now switched their attention to McDermott and England boss Tony Smith.

Smith had a dual role as national boss and Leeds Rhinos coach for part of last year before quitting the champions to take over the national job full time.

But Warrington may make a plea for him to revert to a dual role with them after this year’s World Cup.

Good luck to McDermott with Warrington IF he goes. He's a talented young coach, and sets his teams out well.
