Burgess commits to Bradford

Post by josie andrews »

Sam Burgess has committed his future to the Bradford Bulls by inking a new three-year contract.
The teenage Great Britain international is one of the hottest properties in the engage Super League and his future had been the subject of much speculation.
But that has now ended with the news that Burgess, who still had another 12 months to run on his previous deal, has agreed to remain with the Bulls until the end of the 2011 season.
It had been feared by Braford fans that Burgess might be lured away by arch rivals Leeds as a replacement for Gareth Ellis or tempted Down Under, but he says such a move never crossed his mind.
"I'd never heard about other clubs coming in for me and it never affected me or the decision I was going to make anyway," the 19-year-old told The Bradford Telegraph and Argus.
"I only wanted to play for the Bulls and was never going to leave.

"It's a big club, I always wanted to stay and there was no one else I wanted to play for.
"We've been in talks for a while so I'm happy to get it over and done with now."

Bradford coach Steve McNamara was delighted to have secured the future of Super League's 2007 young player of the year.
"Sam is THE big signing everyone wanted," he said.
"Every Super League club and plenty of others in Australia would love to have got Sam and have him in their side but he's playing here with us which is just great news.

"He had another year left to run on his contract but we've decided to upgrade it and we're absolutely delighted that a super player and a super young man has decided to commit his future to Bradford Bulls."

Pity we couldn't have signed him instead of a certain other prop!
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It was the opposite way around Gemma!

Leeds wanted Burgess, in reward for dropping the court proceedings. Nice try I suppose from the Yorkshire Feckers
