Did you see his comments in today's WEP, Dave?
"We are building a foundation stone, though, and it is important that we recognise that.
"It is also very important that we recognise that there are some good teams in this competition and that we are not going to get our own way week in and week out.
Maybe so, but Wakefield aren't one of them. Neither are we, clearly.
No I hadn't seen it and I think the above comments are making me as mad as I was when I left the ground on Sunday!
There was a chap a few rows down from me who on the way out was saying "Well we can't win them all" as if we had just played a good game and had unluckily lost to a superior side. The fact we played a team considered in with no chance this season missing half its 1st choice players had obviously gone over his head.
It seems like it has gone over Nobles as well.
And what is this building a foundation stone talk? How long does it take him to build a team? A decade?
"We are going to try to get our own way but the pressure within this group of players is to improve individually on what we achieved last year and find ourselves an element of consistency in our performances.
"It is down to the players to show up."
Yeah, but it's up to you to be getting the best out of them; that's a coach's job!
It was also the problem he should of addressed last year. It isn't a new problem with the team but the same problem as last year. If we tank Hull it won't mean we have solved anything because on past form we would then probably lose to Cas the week after. This is what we saw last season too often and back then we never knew what to expect in terms of what team would turn up. We are none the wiser this season after Sunday.
So put your money where your mouth is, and drop the ones who didn't perform.
I'm not holding my breath, though.
I'll be very surprised if we see many changes for Friday. I'd be willing to bet that if Mathers doesn't get banned, he'll be in the side - and even if he does get a ban, as he should, he'll be straight back in when it expires.
If Mathers is banned it will be Goulding in and Phelps on the wing. If he isn't banned the only change I'd expect is O'Carroll to be dropped for Prescott (which might happen anyway) such is my lack of faith in his selection policy.
