I think the problem is Juan if let's say Wigan kept back £200K in the salary cap. Had we not signed a Martin Gleeson or whomever, that would be 200K not used for 2009 and put us at a disadvantage to other teams and would also beg the question as to how we can believe Lenagan given the excuse has always been that we are hampered by the cap through pre Lenagan contracts. A 200K surplus would mean that has never been the case.

A lot of the young lads though I am led to believe are on awful money.

Not as bad as it used to be under Lindsey, Lenegan at least tried to distribute the cap more evenly. Managing contracts for young players is hard, you don't want to offer then loads of money and a long contract if they end up playing like Denis Moran. On the other hand you don't want to offer them too little that they can easily find better offers should they become a super star.
juanpablo wrote:No as Noble wont even talk to him & theres already enough money avaible in the salery cap for Gleeson & Wigan have also offered Danny Brough a contract & that will be sorted when Tim Smith leaves next month
Danny Brough rejected an offer from Wigan during the off season I don't see what has changed although I would have Brough over Smith any day. Spot on about Goulding though, Noble wouldn't mind seeing the back of Goulding and vice versa but Lenegan might want to keep hold of Goulding as letting good young players leave was a major criticism of Lindsey.

It wouldn't surprise me if Lenegan did lie about the money left on the cap. Giving the real figure would put Lenegan in a bad position when trying to sign a player as the agent will know how much money is free and demand that as his players wage. If the agent doesn't know the amount of salary cap left then it give Lenegan more opportunity to negotiate. If I remember correctly Lenegan managed to get Phelps and Smith in last season with very little space left on the cap.

MrDave wrote:In my opinion Wigan haven't really had two decent centres since 2002 when Wigan had Jamie Ainscough and Gary Connolly and even Jamie Ainscough had his fair share of criticism if I remember correctly.

2003- Jamie Ainscough - Paul Johnson (not a specialist centre)
2004 - Martin Aspinwal - David Hodgeson (both to young at the time and Hodgeson was more of a winger.)
2005 - Martin Aspinwal - David Vaealiki (Aspinwal was still young and DV was awful)
2006 - Pat Richards - David Vaealiki (Enough said)
2007 - Phil Bailey - Micheal Withers (neither were specialist centres)

2008a - Darrell Goulding (struggled sometimes too young) - George Carmont
2008b - Phil Bailey (not a specialist centre) - George Carmont
2008c Cameron Phelps (not a specialist centre) - George Carmont

2009? Martin Gleeson - George Carmont (If Gleeson comes and he plays well it could be Wigan first decent centres since 2002)
Didnt Jamie Ainscough end up playing mainly on the wing MrDave.

The fact remains if you say one thing and do another as chairman the fans will soon start not to believe a word you say.

There are better ways to manage agents expectations than lie in public!

As to Goulding the one ray of hope was the report in the press Wigan were reluctant to let him leave. If it really is true Noble has effectively cut him off then I want Noble out of the club sooner rather than later.

There is often a lot written about chairmen interfering with the coach and that he coach should have a free hand to do as he pleases but apart from the fact that is in reality unrealistic here is a prime example of when the chairman needs to set the policy and the coach toe the policy line. IL should be making it quite clear Goulding is part of the future of this club and that it is Noble's job to bring him on as a player. Not go looking for a quick fix by signing a player who turns 29 in six weeks.

I find it very hard to believe that the unanimous opinion on this is that Gleeson is a has been. He is an absolutely world class player. having had the privilege of watching the World Cup semi in Brisbane, that night he stood out in exalted company. There is no comparison between Goulding and Gleeson. I for one rate Senior very highly and he 34 (that's a guess). Gleeson is also a better 6 than anything we have at the club, and a Wiganer, so it is like when we brought Lydon and Greg home in one sense.
On Goulding, I would like him to be a world beater, but I haven't seen anything in him that makes me think he will even be as good as Carmont. We can blame Noble for that, just as we can say that players like Prescott and Tomkinses improve despite Noble. It seems hard to argue both, but plenty on here seem to manage it. My opinion is that Pryce and Thornley both stand a better chance of being world class centres in a few years than Goulding, and we are right to be investing time and effort in Thornley. If Goulding was ever going to be world class he would have had the impact on the team that Ainscough and Sam have had in a handful of games, in my opinion.
On IL, I don't care what he says, and whether I trust him or not. I have only met him once, and didn't warm to him, but my sole concern is the team. I can see why he would say that we hardly have any money left as it dampens expectations and perhaps keeps the millions of agents who link our club to every player on the market, less ammo to do so. If that is his logic, it is perfectly sound.
Finally, I think Brough is exactly the sort of player the team needs. I would make him captain pronto as well - he was great in that role for Scotland.
