txt speak vs netiquette

hang on a minute, what is IMO?????????????
"IMO" is an internet-standard abbreviation for "In my opinion". Such abbreviations have been around for a long time and form part of the accepted standards of usage for usenet and other online communities such as this one (try looking up netiquette on google for the full do's and don'ts of communicating in the online world).

IMO such abbreviations are appropriate here in an online environment, whereas txt spk abbreviations are not as this is not a mobile phone (is there still a WAP version of this site?!) and we're not restricted to 100 letters per message (or whatever the limit is). Also text speak has no standards, letrs r droped an wrds mispeld almost randomly, making it very difficult to read. It's difficult to have a discussion on a discussion board when some of the readers can't understand what is being said.

Or perhaps the standard of English being taught in schools isn't what it used to be...

Rant over.

mrs lam, people arent picking on you or anything like that

anyone who has used "text speak" before on any wigan board has been asked to stop because all the people on these boards above about 24-25 yrs old just dont understand and even i at 19 sometimes struggle

shorting things like using 2 instead of to/two/too is fine

its jus using total text speak is very hard to understand

hope that clears it all up simpily

What do you mean, "when you don't need to"? It's part of the English language: if a word has a 'g' at the end then it's necessary to write the word with a 'g' at the end. You always "need to", regardless of whether it "feels weird" or not (which it shouldn't, since English is almost certainly your 1st language).

As AJ said, it's not a personal thing. Us older folk (usually anyone over 20!) have the same complaints to all txt spkers on here, because we just don't understand why people can't speak in proper English. Personally I think most people's spelling when typing is bad enough anyway without deliberately making things worse with txt spk.

Just because its proper english doesnt mean I have to type it, I dont speak it!
Anyway I am typing my g's now so theres no need to tell me to do that because i am doing.
It was a reply to Rach anyway, sorry if Ive offended you.

All replies are public on here, that's the whole point, but I wasn't offended. Sorry if I started ranting a bit. I also don't speak proper English, but I think it's important to at least try and write properly. That must be what working at a University does for you, even though I was too thick to get in here as a student.

BTW sorry John M for making you feel old! 26 is still very young, of course, but having reached 30 in the last year I'm starting to feel I'm at an age when things start to go downhill.... Where's my pension book?
