Defence is important all over the field in RL every time the opposition has then ball be it in your own 10m area or theirs.
A solid defence means you need to score less to win but you still must score points to win the game.
If you defend all night and have poor attack you will lose more than you win.
You must be able to put points on the board because nilling a team is a rare thing and the last thing you want to do is keep them out for 85 minutes and then lose 4-0.
There is nothing worse than being the "better" team yet have the opposition take the one or two chances they get to win the game.

Re: A general question
Defence lays the platform and if it's done the way we are wears the opposition down.
Switch to a different sport - Squash. In the main, the top players all play a very attritional defence orientated game. It's not about flashy high risk shots! The foundation of their game is all about shot accuracy, playing percentages to force an error and playing the safe shot until the court opens up.
Sound familiar?

Re: A general question
The winners of the last Superbowl had the best Offense. The winners before had one of the best defence iirc.
It seems Maguire from interviews from players etc has focused on the defensive side of things. It just so hapens our attacking options and plays have worked wonders for us.
Look at Melbourne, Maguire has come from a side who work veyr hard on their defensive plays. They held up Leeds in the opening minutes and saved a few tries that, say, Salford would have conceeded. I'd rather spend more energy holding a player up over the line and getting possession 2 or 3 tackles down the line than letting in a try and waiting another set (3 minutes) to regain possession deep in our half, which it would be after 5 drives and a kick.

Our worst enemy played the most attack based football over the passed 6 years or so, reaping them allsorts of trophies.weststand-rich wrote:Defence lays the platform and if it's done the way we are wears the opposition down.

The last season and a half has seen a change towards a less attacking style with no silverware.
Possession wins games, the attacking side has possession.
