Administrators / Ex Players who don't know RL (Boots n All)

Post by cpwigan »

How embarassing is it when these so called experts know so little about our sport and yet profess they do. McDermott backing up his boss claimed GB outplayed the Aussies in the 50's / 60's etc. Yes we did BUT GUESS WHAT BARRY YOU BAFOON, The Aussies cried non stop about our defensive tactics and how we stifled attacking play with an umberella offside defence. Our defensive prowess was seen a key to our dominance.

Hetherington crying about a close low scoring games. Some of the best games I have seen have been low scoring and no tries. WCC 1987 Manly. Low scoring games are nothing new. They happen and they can be tremendous to watch. RL is not basketball.

Just watched Boot N All and Gary Hetherington just summed up why England are behind the Aussies.

He claimed that coaches have been making the rules rather than administrators which is just incorrect. What is happening is coaches are looking for new ways to gain an advantage within the rules. The Australians coaches are much better at developing the sport of rugby league while the majority of rugby league in England just complain about it.

Does Gary Hetherington think that when it comes to the Four Nations that we can ask the Aussies not to wrestle our players in the tackle because we don't like it...I know what their response would be.

Sports will always develop whether it be through money or through new tactics or training and if you want to be successful you have to embrace it. About 50 years ago sports teams didn't even have fitness training or diet management yet now they are common place in sport because Liverpool FC manager Bill Shankly brought them to mainstream football (as well as many other 'new' things) and because they were successful other teams and sports followed suit.

leeds are one of the worst offenders for lying on in the tackle ie:mcguire and senior takes an eternity to get off.Hetherington is a dick.

The simple fact was both teams attacked poorly. A common trait amongst British teams / players when under pressure. For Leeds handling errors were far too common place whilst for Wigan decision making was found wanting.

The more times you play at such a level the more likely you are to get such things right.

Wrestling had nothing to do with either teams sub standard attack. How on earth does wrestling explain Leeds inability to catch and hold onto the ball.

Hethrington is a first class idiot for coming out with such drivel. As for us outplaying the Aussies in the 50/60's, that might have something to do with the quality we had available then, Boston, Mctigue, Murphy, Ashton, Bevan, etc etc. World class doesn't come into it.

For the infamous 47,747 match at CP that night against Skins the two teams boasted "the four greatest outside backs in the world". We definately had more talent in the UK back then, now the talent lies in Aus with a few sprinkles over here...

Warrington IIRC signed an overseas player called Harry Bath. Bath eventually returned to Aus and coached or played for St George during the period they won 11 consecutive GFs. He introduced St George to the conditioning and defensive tactics he had learned in England.

How times have changed.

Incidentally some bright spark, probably a distant relation of Barry Mac had the bright idea of banning overseas players. The ban created the greatest damage to the development of RL in this country and is part of the reason we now play catch up.

Leeds dropped plenty of ball again last night. I note their coach is whining about slow POTBs though.
