My Uni languages were Basic, Fortran, Cobol, Algol 60, Algol 68 (I still have nightmares about that), Snobol IV, RTL/2, Lisp and for my final year project I wrote an editor in a language called B. Yes just like in the alphabet B comes before C and it was C without any types. It was the systems programming language of the Honeywell 6080 the Uni had bought! That was an antique before it was delivered.

At the OU I have used Smalltalk and Java.
If you want to earn lots of money Mrs Lam then learn as many languages as you can and learn how to tie them into as many database servers as you can - that's where the money is! (not that I'd know :( )
Java rules the roost at work (as opposed to the OU but it is taking over the courses there rapidly) and it is a great language, IMHO of course. Another odd ball language I use a lot is one called Tal specific to a particular HP server.

I think I was at Uni in the middle period between the old, traditional languages and the advert of things like Java. After several years of ZX Spectrum basic I got to play with COBOL, C and Smalltalk, along with the development languages behind Paradox and Oracle. After 3 attempts I still can't do C, have picked up Peoplesoft as a new internetty type thing, am currently trying to teach myself PhP but was a bit bemused to find out that as part of the Peoplesoft project we might have to do some COBOL! 15 years after I learned this most long-winded of data processing languages in a classroom it seems it's made a bit of a comeback even in the World Wide Web!

I know threads tend to drift, but what the hell has this got to do with Wigan,RL, or anything?

thing is now geoffn alot of mobile phones have predictive text so really don't need to do txt anymore.
The first thing I do when I get a new mobile is disable the predictive text,
Me too. It never manages to predict what I want to say (which is usually a reply to a message from one of the kids, asking to be collected from somewhere obscure!)

Something related to Wigan.

I went the pics with my Latics supporting mate on a match day a few years ago (Is that now 3 sins?) and we were walking back over the JJB carpark in themiddle of a very interesting rugby conversation but I then turned around to see a big coach behind me about 2 metres away. Obviously jumped out the way and then as it went past noticed Terry O Connor and Cassidy laughing at the fear on my face (or my latics mate?) I then texted my mum to tell her "Nearly got run over by the Wigan Coach" didnt check it and got a paniccy phone call asking if Dave(whoever he is) was ok and how he'd got run over by the coach.

Useless predictive text
