Re: Willie Mason

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Utter disgrace

One rule for Wigan Warriors & the rest can please themselves what they do on or off the field, it makes my blood boil grrrrr
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Can't believe a club can have what amounts to two categories of players, registered and unregistered. Can't believe they will get away with this.

Maybe the Cockayne issue was intended as a smokescreen?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA Hull KR's and the RFL's way of putting it:

"The RFL have this afternoon released the following statement regarding Michael Dobson and Willie Mason.

The statement reads as below:

The RFL can confirm that Hull Kingston Rovers have re-registered Australian scrum-half Michael Dobson and that the player is eligible for selection for the Engage Super League Round 11 fixture at Hull FC on Friday April 22.

Hull Kingston Rovers have also de-registered prop Willie Mason following a protracted delay in the player obtaining a Tongan passport.

Any application to re-register Willie Mason, subject to the player obtaining a Tongan passport, would require the full support of the RFL Board of Directors."

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA JOKE!

My guess would be Willie Mason went into Morgans office and said something along the lines of . . . .

Right JM sport Ive spoken to Toulon and im in on their quota thanks for the oppo but Im off on more money! Now you can dress this up how you like say I cant get a tongan passport if you like because toulan have accepted my Aus passport, any chance of your secretary booking me a flight?

Laughable. And he didn't do anything to shout about did he. He can bugger off to France for me. Hull KR ought to be rightly reprimanded for this....... They won't...... But they ought to be.

Just when you think the RFL can't get anymore incompetent, they never cease to amaze me.

If Wigan had attempted this every other club would have blitzed the RFL to prevent us doing it. We were correctly hammered for breaking the cap, but can someone tell me how this is any less against the spirit of the game.

I thought de-registering was for players who had suffered serious injuries not because they can't get a passport to get them off the overseas quota. They've set a precident now and there's no going back once another team tries it.

The RFL should have told Hull KR no and declared Dobson was a free agent, instead they've caved in and made a poor decision.

In light of the RFL statement issued this afternoon, the club has released the following statement regarding Willie Mason.

Willie Mason has been de-registered with the RFL whilst the passport process is finalised.

For reasons beyond the club/players control this process has not been completed.

We were advised on extremely good authority that Willie would qualify for a Tongan passport when he signed for the club.

This has subsequently been backed up in writing several times and most recently again by a letter personally signed off by the Prime Minister of Tonga which states: "I can confirm that all qualifying steps have now been completed and Mr Mason unreservedly is entitled to Tongan nationality and therefore a Tongan passport."

Unfortunately the process has not been finalised following a change of government and the disbanding of the privy council. No passports have been issued in Tonga at all during this period.

The privy council are required to finalise the process. They are constitutionally due to reform next month (May) when it is anticipated the matter will be finalised.

In view of recent rumours circulating about Willie and a move to French rugby union the club will not be pursuing dialogue with the RFL for a discretionary dispensation provided by the rules given these circumstances.

The club will be meeting with Willie and his agent shortly to discuss media reports linking him with a move to French rugby union.

The clubs position remains that Willie is retained under the terms of a contract of employment and that no direct approach has been made for his services.

Sporting life have a similar story but sounds like he is on his bike, the whole thing gets more farcical by the minute and as others have said if it were Wigan (A) We wouldn't have been allowed to do it in the first place
(B)If we had done the rest of super league would be in meltdown by now. What a load of cobblers.
What happened to contracts having some sort of value?

Controversial Australian forward Willie Mason has almost certainly played his last match for Hull KR.

The 31-year-old second rower, who is just six games into a three-year contract with the Super League club, has been summoned for clear-the-air talks after being de-registered on the eve of the Good Friday derby.

He was removed from Rovers' squad for Friday's clash with Hull FC at the KC Stadium to make room for fellow countryman Michael Dobson, who has now recovered from injury.

The club are unable to play both men because their overseas quota is full and they have so far been unable to secure a Tongan passport for Mason which would enable him to get around the restrictions.

Although Rovers remain confident of eventually securing the necessary paperwork with help from the Tongan Prime Minister, they are thought to be ready to part company with the player after he held secret talks with French rugby union club Toulon.

Mason was last week spotted in the south of France chatting to Mourad Boudjellal, the wealthy president of the big-spending Top 14 club who are thought to have offered to quadruple his current wages.

While Mason is off Rovers' register, he remains on their payroll and the club have made it clear that Toulon would have to pay a transfer fee to secure the services of the colourful Australia international.

In a statement, Hull KR said: "In view of recent rumours circulating about Willie and a move to French rugby union, the club will not be pursuing dialogue with the RFL for a discretionary dispensation provided by the rules given these circumstances.

"The club will be meeting with Willie and his agent shortly to discuss media reports linking him with a move to French rugby union.

"The club's position remains that Willie is retained under the terms of a contract of employment and that no direct approach has been made for his services."

Dobson was de-registered on March 10, shortly after undergoing ankle surgery, to make room for Mason and the Rugby Football League say they have approved the reversal.

A statement said: "The RFL can confirm that Hull Kingston Rovers have re-registered Australian scrum-half Michael Dobson and that the player is eligible for selection for the Engage Super League Round 11 fixture at Hull FC on Friday, April 22.

"Hull Kingston Rovers have also de-registered prop Willie Mason following a protracted delay in the player obtaining a Tongan passport.

"Any application to re-register Willie Mason, subject to the player obtaining a Tongan passport, would require the full support of the RFL board of directors."

Thursday's development clearly paves the way for Mason to make the move to France and provide yet another twist to a controversial career.

Courted by Huddersfield when he decided to leave the NRL, Mason chose Craven Park as his next destination but he missed the first month of the season after being delayed by the red tape that followed him to the north of England.

He finally arrived, to a fanfare reception, on March 7 and made an impressive Super League debut against Crusaders just six days later.

However, Mason has made little impact in five appearances since then, although he scored his first try for Rovers on his 31st birthday against Wigan last Friday.

Mason, who signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season at Craven Park, now looks destined to follow in the footsteps of another controversial former Canterbury Bulldogs player, Sonny Bill Williams, who walked out on his NRL club to pursue a career in French rugby union.

Toulon helped Williams make a successful transition from a rugby league forward to a powerful rugby union three-quarter and could now get the opportunity to try to repeat the feat with Mason.

England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson and Wales centre Gavin Henson are currently with Toulon and the ambitious club have already recruited Springboks forward Bakkies Botha and Wallabies utility back Matt Giteau for next season.

Mason has considered a switch of codes in the past, having spoken to the Waratahs in 2007 and he also visited Japan in 2009 to talk with rugby union clubs.

Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.
