Reds Part Company With McRae

Post by josie andrews »

Salford City Reds have today formalised an agreement to part company with Head coach Shaun McRae with immediate effect. McRae has been on sick leave since March.

McRae said "This mutual agreement allows both the Club and myself to move on in a fresh direction, the past four years with the Reds have taken my career as a Head Coach to the 450 game landmark. The Salford experience has included a clean sweep of trophies during one season in the National League and the challenges of competing in the elite Super League, highlighted by the development of a crop of young players. My thanks go the Reds Chairman John Wilkinson and Directors, players, back-room and office staff, sponsors and, of course, the faithful fans, coupled with best wishes for a new era in a new home."

The agreement allows the Reds to step up their search for a new Head Coach without delay, and enables an appointment to be made as soon as a suitable candidate is selected.

Reds Chief Executive David Tarry brokered the deal and is looking forward to the next phase of the club's development with renewed optimism.

"Shaun McRae has a fantastic record in terms of Rugby League coaching and we would like to thank him for his efforts at Salford City Reds," commented Tarry. "The club feel it is time for a change and we need to move on, and there is no doubt now that as we head into the new stadium, the head coach's job at Salford is one of the most attractive available in the game at this time. We anticipate a high calibre appointment that will push the club quickly onto the next level."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.

that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Lam in the frame for Salford job

FORMER Wigan crowd-pleaser Adrian Lam is thought to be in the running to take charge at Salford, writes Phil Wilkinson.

Reds are hunting for a coach for 2012 for their historic first season in their new stadium after coach Shaun McRae – currently on sick leave – confirmed he will be leaving.

Ex-Warriors boss Ian Millward, now at Championship side Leigh, has already been linked with the post.

But Lam could come into the frame after climbing through the coaching ranks in the NRL.

Lam spent four hugely successful years at Wigan as a player from 2001 in which he helped them to Challenge Cup glory and was voted Super League’s Players’ Player of the Year.

He started his coaching career in 2005, working with current Warriors No.2 Shaun Wane with the young-guns, before returning to Australia with Cronulla Sharks.

The former Queensland skipper later moved to his old club Sydney Roosters as an assistant coach before taking a similar position at premiers St George-Illawarra.

He was interested in the Wigan job before Michael Maguire’s appointment in 2010 and while he would surely be a contender to take over if Wane does not get appointed to the Warriors position next season, he looks set to throw his hat into the ring to return to the English competition with Salford.

l FORMER Wigan coach Graham Lowe has quit as chief executive of NRL side Manly for health reasons.

The 64-year-old was in charge at Central Park in the late-80s and enjoyed huge success, before turning to administration later in his career.
