Elliott to be Roosters assistant

Matthew Elliott's NRL coaching career will be resurrected at Bondi next season with the sacked Penrith mentor accepting an assistant role with the Sydney Roosters.

Elliott, told last month his contract at the Panthers would not be renewed beyond this season before being shown the door for good last week, will work under Brian Smith at the Roosters.

He signed a two-year deal starting in 2012.

"He is an experienced coach with a terrific understanding of rugby league who already has a close association with our head coach, Brian Smith," said Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce.

Smith and Elliott have a long-term association, which first began when Elliott played under Smith at St George in the early 1990s.

Elliott then began his coaching apprenticeship under Smith at the Dragons before he followed the veteran coach to England where they worked together at Bradford in the Super League competition.

"I look forward to again working with Matthew and am sure that he will be a great asset to the club," Smith said.
