Jonathon Davies Red Button

Post by southernpie »

I would love to see Cas beat the Giants today. Before the start of the year, Cas and Wakey seemed odds on to lose their Super League licenses, but the start to the season by Cas, which should just about see them into the playoffs plus a good cup run, should be enough to see them safe as long as they have their ground sorted. I started thinking about this after hearing the little Welshman having a go about Harlequins, and how the expansion experiment in London should be wrapped up, never once was Crusaders mentioned and only a foppish nod to Kear about Wakefield, even though both teams below the Quins had points docked for going into administration, which I thought was a big negative in one's case for a license. My worry is that if the RFL decide to promote a second Championship side, it will be Salford that misses out as their last five games are against Whinos, Warriors, Giants, Stains and Cats and apart from Wakey it is only Quins and Crusaders below them

They're not going to leave salford out on the strength of the last 5 games. They've got the stadium nearly ready, The only team near a huge area of population, they'll be fine.

Plus the decision's being announced on tuesday so the last few games have no relevance.

Sorry for my lack of articulation, the point I was trying to make was that Salford are very unlikely to improve their position on the table. They have the stadium well under way, what is the situation with Castleford's stadium? But Castleford's table position should keep them safe. The only teams below Salford are Quinns and Crusaders (with Wakey) and the RFL won't let either of those go down, so I fear that Salford will be the team to miss out if the RFL want to promote a second team. I realise that there are other criteria involved so hope Salford's application is better than any other championship team ie Halifax

I can't see that Halifax will have a better application than Salford. I think it will just be one up, one down and it will be Wakefield. Cas have good support, i think the issues with the ground are sorted now and they've had a good season. Plus their youth development is always good. Don't think they'll miss out.

As you say they won't relegate Quins or Crusaders so think it's just Wakefield that are in trouble. They put that criteria in that there should be no other team within 20 miles or whatever so that these teams would get a point that no others could, giving them a better chance of a license.

The 20 miles thing is a bit daft, it shouldnt matter so long as our game is growing for the good!

The trouble with Quins is their attendance, other than this they are pretty good, they have a good youth development too which should start coming to fruition for them shortly!

Crusaders could have a good youth development but to be honest Im not sure what structures they have here?

All teams need to market the game better and the game needs marketing better, Sky IMO are getting better but clubs and the beeb need to up the ante here, we do pretty good on the marketing front but everyone needs to do more, the better the marketing the better the crowds, the better the crowds the better the finances and tv deals and maybe then maybe we could look at raising the cap!

That was where Jonathon Davies got my attention as he was arguing that Quinns should be relegated/disbanded and a team set up in the lower league to be used as a feeder of any good London talent to Super league clubs, but never once mentioned Crusaders.

My only complaint is Cru being classed as 'expansion' now they are in Wrecsam. Its just down the road from Widnes/Warrington and closer for us than most, if not all Yorkshire sides!
