THE father of Super League star Sean Gleeson was arrested yesterday by police and UK Border Agency officers investigating a suspected drug-smuggling ring.
It is understood his arrest followed the seizure of 20 kilos of heroin which arrived in the country through the port of Dover.
The UK Border Agency, supported by officers from Greater Manchester Police, arrested Paul Gleeson, 51, in Wigan, Greater Manchester
It is believed he was being questioned last night as the Border Agency con-tinued what was described as an “ongoing” operation.
His rugby player son Sean, 23, plays for Salford City Reds after signing for the club at the start of the season.
Sean has played at fullback, wing and centre for clubs including Wakefield, Widnes and his home team of Wigan.
He lives with his father, mother Susan, 50, and sister Kathryn, 26.
The former Irish international is a cousin of rugby-playing brothers Martin, 31, and Mark Gleeson, 29. Ex-Great Britain international Martin is currently on sick leave from Hull with a stress-related illness. The club earlier this summer denied rumours that he had been sacked.
Mark plays for Barrow Raiders.
At the family home last night Mrs Gleeson said: “We don’t know what is happening ourselves. Can we just leave it at that for the time being?”
A spokeswoman for the Border Agency said last night: “The UK Border Agency can confirm that officers are undertaking an operation in the Highfield area of Wigan today.”

Thanks Wiggy, was a bit confused till I saw your post
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
