WIDNES are believed to be closing in on the signature of Cronulla Sharks star Tim Smith for their return to Super League in 2012.
The Vikings are in the market for a top class half-back and a marquee signing that will underline their top flight intentions.
Widnes are facing competition from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in the race for his signature but it is understood that Widnes are very close to securing Smith's services.
Sources in Australia claim talks between Smith and Widnes are at an ‘advanced stage’.
The 26-year-old, whose contract at Cronulla runs out at the end of this season, has found himself low down in the Sharks' pecking order after the acquisition of Jeff Robson, Albert Kelly and Chad Townsend.
He has had Super League experience with Wigan Warriors where he played 21 times, scoring two tries, in 2008/9.
It’s no secret that the Vikings are in the hunt for half-back pairing and it’s believed they may have even considered making a move for Australian bad boy Todd Carney.
Carney has been involved in several off-field indiscretions which have see him released by Sydney Roosters.
However, even if the Vikings were to make a play for his signature, they may have difficulty obtaining a visa.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

When he wasn't at his wellest, he decided to pop his old fella out at some ladies doing an exercise class at Total fitness. The said ladies were not impressed.
