Tim Smith

Post by TrueBlueWarrior »

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have agreed to sign Australian half-back Tim Smith, subject to the former Wigan Warriors player obtaining a visa.

The 26-year-old ex-Parramatta player has agreed a one-year deal.

"I've been in England before but I think now is a better time for me to come across and I'm happy to be coming to Wakefield," he said.

"I've spoken to Richard [Agar] about his plans for next year and I'm looking forward to being part of the team."

Smith began his professional career at Parramatta before moving to Wigan in 2008.

He returned to the NRL with Cronulla Sharks, making 19 appearances and scoring five tries.

That competition for places can bring the best out of all three which can only be beneficial for us next season
Richard Agar

Wakefield coach
He found his chances limited in 2011 and is looking to reignite is career in Super League.

"I think having played in Super League before will work in my favour because I've got an idea of what to expect," Smith said.

"I just want to play consistently well and do my job for the team. If I can play well then I'll be happy and, from a team point of view, hopefully we can have a good year and try and make the play-offs."

Smith's arrival will give head coach Richard Agar added options at half-back following the recent signing of Isaac John and Kyle Wood.

Agar said: "He's obviously played in Super League before so he knows what it's all about and he's coming here wanting to get back playing regularly and playing to his undoubted ability, and I know he is determined to make the most of this move.

"We've got new options with Tim, Isaac John and Kyle Wood in the halves and that competition for places can bring the best out of all three which can only be beneficial for us next season.

"It's a great opportunity for him and we are happy and excited to have his talent and experience in the group."

Smith signs for Wakefield

Australian half-back Tim Smith will attempt to resurrect his career with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in 2012.

The 26-year-old former Wigan Warriors player had been linked with a move to Engage Super League new boys Widnes Vikings after being released by Cronulla but the Wildcats today confirmed his signing on a 12-month deal, subject to a successful visa application.

Smith began his professional career at Parramatta, where he won the Dally M rookie-of-the-year award in 2005, but he was suspended indefinitely by them in 2008 following a series of off-field indiscretions.

He joined Wigan on an 18-month contract in June 2008 but sustained a shoulder injury and was released after making just 23 appearances and spent this year with Cronulla.

“I’ve been in England before but I think now is a better time for me to come across and I’m happy to be coming to Wakefield,” said Smith.

“I think having played in Super League before will work in my favour because I’ve got an idea of what to expect.

“My family are also coming over with me this time which I think will make a big difference for me personally.”

Smith is Wakefield’s 15th close-season signing and will add to new coach Richard Agar’s options at half-back following the acquisition of Isaac John and Kyle Wood.

“Tim is a very talented player and we’re delighted to have him as part of the squad for 2012,” Agar said.

“He’s obviously played in Super League before so he knows what it’s all about and he’s coming here wanting to get back playing regularly and playing to his undoubted ability.

“I know he is determined to make the most of this move.”
