Nobody improved, Noble was coach!!cherry.pie wrote:Union clubs would have been interested regardless of whether Ashton signed a new contract or not, they had been interested since he first arrived on the scene and Ashton would have taken the lucrative offer. He's better suited to Union too, so he probably made the right decision in that respect.slimshady wrote:Not a clue where you are getting your info from but it is absolute TRIPE, Ashton wanted to sign for wigan FACT! Noble tried to shaft him and force his hand by revealing information about contract negotiations on TV. Wigan always try to sign the younger players on the cheap, they did the same with Thornley who also wanted to stay, he was prepared to sign for a lot less money than the RU were offering but he wanted a three year deal and they said no so he left. Also if I remember rightly Ashton was voted player of the season by the fans and it did harm the club because we struggled at FB for a long time after!
Ashton definitely had talent and yes he was better than his replacement (but then who wouldn't be), but since he first came through into the first team he never seemed to make any improvements to the weaknesses in his game. In fact in his final season he was arguably worse at the defensive aspect of the game than he had been previously. Right now we have a much better fullback and the team is in a much better position.
No one knows what Ashton would have become in league. He'd have probably become a very good player just like he has in union, but to get back to the original question of whether Wigan should be interested in bringing him back, then no way. Not good enough to justify the inevitable expense. We have better.

Re: Chris Ashton
Did Ashton deserve to be on more than £15K p/a at that time of his Wigan career?
In a similar situation, its not so long ago that Josh Charnley was on a lesser salary than the £15K Ashton was then on.
Josh has decided to stay at Wigan and as a result he has hopefully been rewarded with a much improved contract.
I am so pleased we have Josh on the wing and not Ashton, or daresay Sam at Fullback and not Ashton.
